The most outstanding feature of the 1971 -72 Sparton football team was not their 9-0 record, but the manner in which they attained that cherished goal. The Spartans did not just win every game, they annihilated nearly every op- ponent that took the field against them. The following facts prove that point. The Spartans: 1) outscored opponents 374-37; 2) held opponents to 100 yards per game while gaining nearly 400; 3) allowed opponents only 1.7 yards per rushing play while averaging over 5 yards; 4) gained over 200 yards per game in passing alone; 5) held 6 of 9opponents scoreless; and 6) broke or tied 23 conference records. The interior line of the Spartans has to be recognized as the most im- proved portion of the squad. These individuals, Tim Reed, Rod Watson, Doug Karns, Dennis Wahlert, and Kelvin Kopp, although outweighed by every opponent, outhustled and outhit all of them. This line opened holes for one of the best backfields in Anita football history. Halfbacks Mike Johnson and Warren Kelloway provided the outside speed while John Blazek got the tough yards up the middle. Johnson and Kelloway were backed up by a pair of halfbacks that kept the Spartan machine moving when injuries plagued the starters. To Bill Wohlleber and Randy Heaton goes a large por- tion of the credit for Anita's outstanding season. Little can be said that hasn't already been noted about Anita's passing game. It has been strong for the last two years but was strengthened by the addition of the strong ground attack. Another factor which obviously im- proved the passing game was the return of split-end Dennis Heath. Dennis was surpassed only by teammate Paul Mai lander in receptions in the Little Seven Conference. Jim Mailander directed the offensive attack and gained recognition as one of the top quarterbacks in Southwest Iowa. Defense played an important role in this year's successful season. As earlier mentioned, Anita held 6 of their 9 opponents scoreless. The key was again the aggressive linemen, Dave Pollock, Neal Pash, Tim Reed, Rod Watson, and Doug Kams. The linemen were backed by tough hitting line- backers and an extremely quick secondary. Last, but certainly not least, was the cooching staff. Head coach Ron Johnson obviously had the material, but he utilized that material to its fullest extent to make this perfect season possible. Bob Jackson assisted in cooching the varsity and also had the job of preparing the frosh-soph grid- ders for future varsity competition. Glenn Hartley acted as scout for the Spartans and Dove Boldt took game films. Overall, 1971-72 Spartan football will long be remembered as a success- ful and rewording experience by players, coaches and fans. SPARTANS CLAIM CROWN 8 Asst.
