The Spartans beat out Trey- nor, rated as the No. 1 Class A team and Charter Oak in the playoff system devised by the Iowa High School Athletic as- sociation. The association con- ducted a “dummy run of the system to see how k works. The playoffs will begin this fall. The Anita club garnered 46J points in the system, Charter Oak had 46.1 and Treynor sba-ed third with Manning at 45.6 Harlan was the leader in the Class AAA ratings for this area and Atlantic was second. Har- lan, the undefeated area leader for larger schools, had 46.1 points. The Atlantic Trojans, whose only defeat was to Harlan, plac- ed second with 42.8 points. In- dianola was third with 41.1 points and Audubon shared fourth with Red Oak at 40.6. The Class AA participate for southwest Iowa would have been Coming, which also had an un- defeated record. The Red Raid- ers accumulated 45 points and Central Decatur of Leon was second at 42.8. Four Classes Under the playoff system, the schools are divided into four classes according to enrollment and the state is divided into four areas. The state leaders were: Class A — Alta, Hudson, Clin- ton St. Mary and Anita. Class AA — Boyden-Hull, Cor- ning, Monona and Wapello. Class AAA — Harlan, Iowa Falls, Ntew Hampton and Mar- ion. Class A.AAA — Waterloo East, Sioux City Heelan, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Dubuque Senior (All A AAA schools were placed in one area, instead of four as with the other classes). How the southwest Iowa teams were rated: Class A — Anita, 46.9 points, Charter Oak, 46.1; Treynor, 45.6; Manning, 45.6; AvoHa, 43.3; Bayard, 43.1 and Oakland, 42.8. (50 schools in this area). Class AA — Coming, 45; Leon Central Decatur, 42.8; State Cen- ter, 41.9; Mapleton, 40.6; John- ston, 40.6; Mount Ayr, 38.9 and Bedford, 37.8. (27 schools in area). Class AAA — Harlan, 46.1; At- lantic, 42.8; IndianoQa, 41.1; Audubon, 40.6; Red Oak, 40.6; Creston, 38.3 and Perry, 37.8. (21 schools in thi6 area). A story in tomorrow’s paper will go into more detail on how the playoff system works. Anita Coach Coach Ron Johnson, who guid- ed Anita to an 8-0 record, was quite elated about the high rank- ing for his Spartana. “All year long we were rated behind Treynor in the polls. I feel this is a great honor and a credit to the bard work of the team ” He added that k wiH be an incentive for the 1972 team to try and make the playoffs. Trey- nor has been added to Anita’s schedule this coming season. The Anita coach will lose only five players by graduation, in- cluding Paul Mailander, Denny Heath, Mike Johnson, Neii Pash and Bill WohUeber. Coach Johnson said the sen- iors filled key positions on his team. Mailander and Heath han- dled end positions and the Anita passing duo of Jim Mailander and his brother, Paul, was among the best in the state. Jim Tyler of Atlantic was a school board representative on the playoff committee. Others included Lawrence Parr, Har- lan principal; Richard Harris, Oakland coach and Dr. Robert Benton, Council Bluffs superin- tendent. ANITA WRESTLERS WIN LAST MEET AHS football squad went undefeated for the first time in 10 years. The wrestlers won their first meet in several years.

AHS PEP-SET Football Cheerleaders: Top Row—V. Vanderbur, L. Wohlleber, C. Holaday, C. Herchenbach, K. Kopp. Bottom Row—C. Holaday, C. Rodgers, P. Conrad, K. Stanley, D. Weber. Behind the flashing scenes on the foot- ball field, wrestling mat or basketball court, a set of sparkling AHS students con be seen leoding the crowd in cheers. Who are the members of this pep set? They are the AHS Cheerleaders—varsity football, varsity basketball, varsity wrestling, and J.V. cheerleaders. These four groups of students can always be seen backing the Spartans and Spartanettes no matter if luck seems to be with them or not. Their motto seems to be never say die. Last summer most of the cheerleaders attended a clinic. They brought back many new cheers and ideas, which they performed successfully throughout the year, under the guidance of Mrs. Bromert. These people pepper-uppers instill a standing, proud and untouchable strong spirit in the home of the Spartans. They use their talents in skits, posters, pep meetings, and so on. All of these projects are time consuming and many come and go without a word of thanks. So why do these pepsters do them? Well, maybe it's because they want to prove that AHS does have spirit, but more likely be- cause they are so proud to represent the Anita Spartans and Spartanettes. Such spirit boasted our football boys to an undefeated season.
