Anita High shines a little brighter because of the many goals that have been reached this year. These are some of the Highlights of '72. AND YES, ■ CDRNER PDCKET YDUTH □ENTER One of the many exciting things that affected the students of AHS was the morning Anita firemen and firemen from six other communities were called to battle a raging fire on Anita's mainstreet Monday, Jan. 31, 1972. The Corner Pocket Youth Center had been severely damaged by smoke and water. But, the Youth Center didn't die there. The Youth and KP's reached a repair accord and agreed to pool their insurance money to get a new roof and front. The Anita community responded, supporting the Youth projects and donating large sums of money. Youth Center before the fire. Many Seniors took top honors in academic activities. CHALLENGE TO AHS STUDENTS Connie Holaday Connie Holaday, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Holaday, of Anita, received the John Philip Sousa Award as outstanding musician this year at AHS. Connie received many I's at state music contest in her four years at AHS with her tenor sax solos and groups. Paul Mailander Paul Mailander, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ed Mailander of Wiota, earned the coveted Doub- le Ruby in National Forensic League work. To earn this rank, a student must earn 500 points in a combination of speaking projects. As an outstanding speaker, Paul is the first AHS student to receive this award. Rhonda Kelly Rhonda Kelly, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Claire Kelly of Anita, is an outstanding schol- ar. She maintained a 3.5 average in high school and scored in the top students out of the state of Iowa in the Iowa Scholastic Test. She will be attending nurses' training at Iowa Lutheran this fall. 9

Scott 8 Cooks, custodians, and bus drivers are necessary for our school to function well. Custodian Cecil Littleton, cooks Leitha Jensen, Betty Wahlert, and Phyllis Brownsberger, and the bus drivers provide students with well-balanced meals, well-kept facilities and grounds, and transportation to and from school.

WE’VE JUST BEGUN Once again, speech students of AHS proved that Anita has some of the top speakers in the state. Saturday, March 18, 26 Anita entries earned the Superior I Division. 26 One Ratings To AHS In State Speech Contest Anita Wins Little Seven Conf. Speech Trophy For the third consecutive year, the Anita speech students brought home the Little Eight Conference speech trophy. AHS compiled 180 points. Cumberland-Massena was second with 31. At the State Debate Contest held at Dowling, Febraury 12, Anita and Granville-Spalding each ended the day with a 5-1 record. The two teams were then paired with each other for a TV debate. AHS debaters finished second in the Iowa High School Speech Association's Class B Finals held on WHO-TV, Sunday, April 9. ANITA DEBATERS IN CHAMPIONSHIP DEBATE ON TV - 1:30 P.M. SUNDAY MANY ANITA WINNERS IN ART FAIR HELD HERE Monday, April 17, the Little Eight Conference Art Fair was held at Anita. Among the schools that participated, Anita ranked first with 63 points. Earlham was second with 40 points. 5 AHS STUDENTS TO SW IA. HONOR BAND CONCERT AT RED OAK MON. 4 ONES TO 16 TO CONFERENCE ANITA MUSICIANS BAND FESTIVAL AT AT STATE CONTEST O-M NEXT TUES. 10
