SPARTAN 1972 Anita Community High School Founded 1869 Anita, Iowa Volume XXXIII 1 DEDICATION: Basketball coach, English, math, social studies, French teacher, and librarian all aptly describe Anita High School's Mrs. Ruby McDermott. Miss Ruby Gray began her long tenure at Anita with the twenty-three students of the class of 1923 at AHS in the fall of 1922. Through that long period of time the teaching assignments have changed, but never the unwavering interest in the students of AHS; and for this unwavering interest, we the class of 1972, wish to dedicate our 1972 Spartan to our faithful librarian, Mrs. Ruby Mc- Dermott. A teacher who can arouse a feeling for one single good action, for one single good poem, accomplishes more than he who fills our memory with rows and rows of natural objects, classified with name and form. —Golthe CONTENTS: Working Together Day to Day (Teachers)....................... 3 We Start Out Walking And Learn to Run (Athletics) ...................11 Sharing Horizons That Are New to Us (Activities)..................33 And When the Evenings Comes We Smile (Formality)....................... 53 Talking It Over Just the Two of Us (Classes) ................... 57 The stars of tomorrow . . . they're the young people of today. 2 Mr. Donald Brichacek, our superintendent, has been at Anita High School for three years. Anita High shines a little brighter because of the many goals that have been reached this year. These are some of the Highlights of '72. AND YES, ■ CDRNER PDCKET YDUTH □ENTER One of the many exciting things that affected the students of AHS was the morning Anita firemen and firemen from six other communities were called to battle a raging fire on Anita's mainstreet Monday, Jan. 31, 1972. The Corner Pocket Youth Center had been severely damaged by smoke and water. But, the Youth Center didn't die there. The Youth and KP's reached a repair accord and agreed to pool their insurance money to get a new roof and front. The Anita community responded, supporting the Youth projects and donating large sums of money. Youth Center before the fire. Many Seniors took top honors in academic activities. These records were set in the 100 meter hurdles (Mary Van- derbur), 220 yard hurdles (Mary Vanderbur), 880 yard run (Vicki Vanderbur), Shot-Put (Devon Mardesen), and the Mile Relay (Lori Wohlleber, Vicki Vanderbur, Bev Kopp, Julie Harris). A high point of the season was the Anita Invitational in which the team won their first trophy. In addition to winning the trophy, several of the new records were set. Since the track squad for 1972 consisted of only three seniors and twenty-nine underclassmen, Anita can look forward to an improved team in 73. The Spartans beat out Trey- nor, rated as the No. 1 Class A team and Charter Oak in the playoff system devised by the Iowa High School Athletic as- sociation. The association con- ducted a “dummy run of the system to see how k works. The playoffs will begin this fall. The Anita club garnered 46J points in the system, Charter Oak had 46.1 and Treynor sba-ed third with Manning at 45.6 Harlan was the leader in the Class AAA ratings for this area and Atlantic was second. Har- lan, the undefeated area leader for larger schools, had 46.1 points. The Atlantic Trojans, whose only defeat was to Harlan, plac- ed second with 42.8 points. In- dianola was third with 41.1 points and Audubon shared fourth with Red Oak at 40.6. The Class AA participate for southwest Iowa would have been Coming, which also had an un- defeated record. The Red Raid- ers accumulated 45 points and Central Decatur of Leon was second at 42.8. Four Classes Under the playoff system, the schools are divided into four classes according to enrollment and the state is divided into four areas. The state leaders were: Class A — Alta, Hudson, Clin- ton St. Mary and Anita. Class AA — Boyden-Hull, Cor- ning, Monona and Wapello. Class AAA — Harlan, Iowa Falls, Ntew Hampton and Mar- ion. Class A.AAA — Waterloo East, Sioux City Heelan, Cedar Rapids Jefferson and Dubuque Senior (All A AAA schools were placed in one area, instead of four as with the other classes). How the southwest Iowa teams were rated: Class A — Anita, 46.9 points, Charter Oak, 46.1; Treynor, 45.6; Manning, 45.6; AvoHa, 43.3; Bayard, 43.1 and Oakland, 42.8. (50 schools in this area). Class AA — Coming, 45; Leon Central Decatur, 42.8; State Cen- ter, 41.9; Mapleton, 40.6; John- ston, 40.6; Mount Ayr, 38.9 and Bedford, 37.8. (27 schools in area). Class AAA — Harlan, 46.1; At- lantic, 42.8; IndianoQa, 41.1; Audubon, 40.6; Red Oak, 40.6; Creston, 38.3 and Perry, 37.8. (21 schools in thi6 area). A story in tomorrow’s paper will go into more detail on how the playoff system works. Anita Coach Coach Ron Johnson, who guid- ed Anita to an 8-0 record, was quite elated about the high rank- ing for his Spartana. “All year long we were rated behind Treynor in the polls. I feel this is a great honor and a credit to the bard work of the team ” He added that k wiH be an incentive for the 1972 team to try and make the playoffs. Trey- nor has been added to Anita’s schedule this coming season. The Anita coach will lose only five players by graduation, in- cluding Paul Mailander, Denny Heath, Mike Johnson, Neii Pash and Bill WohUeber. Coach Johnson said the sen- iors filled key positions on his team. Mailander and Heath han- dled end positions and the Anita passing duo of Jim Mailander and his brother, Paul, was among the best in the state. Jim Tyler of Atlantic was a school board representative on the playoff committee. Others included Lawrence Parr, Har- lan principal; Richard Harris, Oakland coach and Dr. Robert Benton, Council Bluffs superin- tendent. Behind the flashing scenes on the foot- ball field, wrestling mat or basketball court, a set of sparkling AHS students con be seen leoding the crowd in cheers. Who are the members of this pep set? They are the AHS Cheerleaders—varsity football, varsity basketball, varsity wrestling, and J.V. cheerleaders. These four groups of students can always be seen backing the Spartans and Spartanettes no matter if luck seems to be with them or not. Their motto seems to be never say die. Last summer most of the cheerleaders attended a clinic. They brought back many new cheers and ideas, which they performed successfully throughout the year, under the guidance of Mrs. Bromert. These people pepper-uppers instill a standing, proud and untouchable strong spirit in the home of the Spartans. They use their talents in skits, posters, pep meetings, and so on. All of these projects are time consuming and many come and go without a word of thanks. So why do these pepsters do them? Well, maybe it's because they want to prove that AHS does have spirit, but more likely be- cause they are so proud to represent the Anita Spartans and Spartanettes. Such spirit boasted our football boys to an undefeated season. J.V. Cheerleaders: Front Row—J. Brown and D. Williamson, captain. Back Row— R. Steffens, P. Johnson, and D. Cameron, captain. The most outstanding feature of the 1971 -72 Sparton football team was not their 9-0 record, but the manner in which they attained that cherished goal. The Spartans did not just win every game, they annihilated nearly every op- ponent that took the field against them. The following facts prove that point. The Spartans: 1) outscored opponents 374-37; 2) held opponents to 100 yards per game while gaining nearly 400; 3) allowed opponents only 1.7 yards per rushing play while averaging over 5 yards; 4) gained over 200 yards per game in passing alone; 5) held 6 of 9opponents scoreless; and 6) broke or tied 23 conference records. The interior line of the Spartans has to be recognized as the most im- proved portion of the squad. These individuals, Tim Reed, Rod Watson, Doug Karns, Dennis Wahlert, and Kelvin Kopp, although outweighed by every opponent, outhustled and outhit all of them. This line opened holes for one of the best backfields in Anita football history. Halfbacks Mike Johnson and Warren Kelloway provided the outside speed while John Blazek got the tough yards up the middle. Johnson and Kelloway were backed up by a pair of halfbacks that kept the Spartan machine moving when injuries plagued the starters. To Bill Wohlleber and Randy Heaton goes a large por- tion of the credit for Anita's outstanding season. Little can be said that hasn't already been noted about Anita's passing game. It has been strong for the last two years but was strengthened by the addition of the strong ground attack. Another factor which obviously im- proved the passing game was the return of split-end Dennis Heath. Dennis was surpassed only by teammate Paul Mai lander in receptions in the Little Seven Conference. Jim Mailander directed the offensive attack and gained recognition as one of the top quarterbacks in Southwest Iowa. Defense played an important role in this year's successful season. As earlier mentioned, Anita held 6 of their 9 opponents scoreless. The key was again the aggressive linemen, Dave Pollock, Neal Pash, Tim Reed, Rod Watson, and Doug Kams. The linemen were backed by tough hitting line- backers and an extremely quick secondary. Last, but certainly not least, was the cooching staff. Head coach Ron Johnson obviously had the material, but he utilized that material to its fullest extent to make this perfect season possible. Bob Jackson assisted in cooching the varsity and also had the job of preparing the frosh-soph grid- ders for future varsity competition. Glenn Hartley acted as scout for the Spartans and Dove Boldt took game films. Overall, 1971-72 Spartan football will long be remembered as a success- ful and rewording experience by players, coaches and fans. SPARTANS CLAIM CROWN 8 Asst. Everyone's enthusiasm continued as all took part in the evening's pep rally. Friday's activities began with the coronation of King and Queen. It was filled with sentimental tears and proud smiles as Paul Mailander and Peg Harris were crowned to reign over Spartan Land. The gym was dedicated to Coach Johnson and Coach Jackson through the theme, To Sir(s) with Love. The parade was held downtown as the marching Spartans led the parade, the Booster Club maneuvered their lawn- mowers, and the class floats were also part of the procession. The enthusiasm of the student body was shown at the pep rally held at the bandshell in the park. It was announced that the juniors received first place for their float, Who'll Stop the Reign?, and the seniors took second place. Excitement was capitalized at the Homecoming game when the mighty Spartans rolled over Earlham, 38-0. This year's Homecoming was dedicated to Mrs. Ruby McDermott for her 50 years at AHS. She was presented a corsage at the coronation and a bouquet of red roses at the game. The week's festivities were brought to a close with a pizza party at the school and a show at the local theater. Head basketball coach David Boldt and assistant Bob Jackson finished the season with another win- ning record, 14-4, as their Spartans won the Little Eight Conference for the second year in a row with an 11-1 record. Many things went into this winning season, but the one major foctor seemed to be the teamwork expressed by the boys. This teamwork was well rewarded as they captured four spots on the All-Con- ference Teams. Jim and Paul Moilander were elected to first team All-Conference Individual Scor- ing. Denny Heath and John Blazek were elected to second team. The Spartans hod the best field goal percentage this year (50.3) which broke the conference record set by Anita last year. Another new record was the Fewest Points allowed, which is 545 for a defensive average of 45.4%. With this type of year behind them, the boys hod high hopes for tournaments! But, the Spartans drew the tough Coming Red Raiders and were defeated in the opening game of sectionals 65-61. Coach Hartley began a rebuilding program for the 71-72 season. The Spartanettes, tied for the Little-8 Title throughout the season, were defeated by Earlham in the deciding game to fall to second place with an 8-4 record. The only returning letter-winner. Peg Harris, led the short forward court with an average of 24 points a game. In conference play. Peg ranked fifth in scoring, field- goal accuracy, and forward rebounds. Becky Karns, who became a regular for the last five games of the year, averaged 12 points a game, and aided with her hustle and floor-play. Filling out the forward court was Rita Sullivan who ranked ninth in field goal ac- curacy and fourth in free-throw percentage. The guard court, who substituted hustle and desire for lack of height, limited the opponents to less than 50 points on occasions, and established a defensive average of 50.1, the best in conference play. The only senior guard, Charolette Boysen, ranked fourth in conference intercep- tions with 38 steals, and ninth in rebounds. Junior guard, Diane Kluever was first in the conference in rebounds with 148 in 12 games and ninth in the state, and third in guard interceptions in conference play. Also returning next year is Becky Power, who aided Diane and Charolette in the backcourt with her ball-handling ability and hustle. The Spartanettes ended their season in the first round of sectionals with a close loss to O-M, 42-40. Coach Hartley loses only four seniors, so with the majority of the team back, the Spartanettes can look forward to an exciting 72-73 season. Their long hours of training and abstinence for making weight strengthens endurance and will power. Good sports- manship and a friendly, yet competitive handshake means a lot. The 1971-72 wrestling season was an experiencing year. In this season the Spartan grapplers hod eight heart-breaking losses, but these were nearly outbalanced by two exciting ties and the first duel-meet win in three years. The Spartans tied with Dexfield and Exira. The highlight of the season came when the Spartans returned to beat Exira, 39-25, in the last duel-meet of the season. The exhausting training hod paid off. Much was gained in the way of self-satisfaction and pride through individual accomplishments as well as working for the team. The two best records by the Anita grapplers were a 12-2 record posted by senior Mike Johnson at 167 lbs. and a 13-6-1 record posted by junior Dan Larsen at 1 19 lbs. Anita's Rick Neighbors at 105 lbs. placed 4th and Dan Larsen ploced 2nd in the Exira Tournament. At the Coon Rapids Tournament, Dan Larsen, again, ploced 2nd while on J. V. Larry Schuler and Kurt Smith both ploced 4th. At the final tournament at the Iowa School for the Deaf, Dan Larsen and Mike Johnson both placed 2nd. Though the boys suffered defeats, they developed a pride which was the in- centive for working to their capacity and tolerating many sacrifices. With only three seniors on the squad, the Spar- tans will be back with a more experienced squad next year. Coach Ron Johnson gives Bob a pep J. V.—Seated—Larry Schuler and talk. Pat Barnes. Mark Aupperle, Gary Ohms. Pat Barnes. Adrian Tierney. Mike Barnes. Resolved: That the Jury System in the United States Should Be Significantly Changed. This question occupied the minds of AHS debaters from September to May. Twenty students working diligently on file boxes, cards and arguments covering the system, gave Anita one of tis most successful debate seasons. Varsity debaters, with only one returning from last year's team, started slowly but by mid-season, had welded them- selves into a formidable team capturing trophies at Denison, Lake City, won the district debate with a perfect record, and then tied for the state championship in Class B debate at Dowling. In a statewide televised debate, AHS lost a close de- bate to Spaldin. In that debate, Paul Mailander was selected as the outstanding debater. At the All-Iowa Finals held at the University of Iowa, Anita received the second place trophy, losing to Spalding on speaker points, each having a 51- record. Anita's novices also made a mark for themselves, as they won trophies at Denison, Atlantic, Dowling, Lake City and Drake University. Managing tournaments took part of the AHS debater's time as they hosted four tournaments culminating in the fifth annual Anita Invitational which attracted many of the top teams in the state. The preceding pages show AHS debaters at work in the WHO-TV studios in Des Moines. 38 NATIONAL FORENSIC LEAGOE N.F.L. Members: Front Row—B. Korns, C. Holaday, S. Stapleton, C. Harris, and P. Parker. NEW CHARTER MEMBER A high honor that every declam and debate student can re- ceive is to become a member of N.F.L. (National Forensic League) under the leadership of Mr. John Burke. The purpose of this organization is to promote the interests of interscholastic debate, oratory, and public speaking by encouraging a spirit of fellowship and by conferring upon deserving candidates a worthy badge of distinction. Before you can become a member you must have 25 points. The league is divided into 4 classes, depending on the number of points the individual has. The different classes, in order of importance are: Degree of Merit, Degree of Honor, Degree of Excellence, and highest. Degree of Distinction. Eoch student receives a pin when he becomes a member. There are different colored stones set in the pin to specify the class which the stu- dent has ochieved. The members, in the classes they rank in, are as follows: Degree of Merit—Gary Rose, Stan Dorsey, Sharon Stapleton, Connie Holoday, Patti Parker, Doug Karns, Becky Karns, Gary Ohms, Pdt Cassell, and Wade Brown. The enrollment of 60 members or degrees within that time, including those added this year, will qualify the chapter to renew the charter. This year the group sponsored a fall debate tournament, a novice debate tournament, and the Anita Invitational. 39 Row 1:C. Boy sen, B. Krause, J. Fulk, K. Kopp, B. Barnes, D. Williamson, V. MUSIC FILLS THE AIR The high school chorus has been very busy this year as they have participated in the conference vocal festival, Adair-Casey Exchange Concert, Christmas and Spring Concerts, and Large Group Contest at Wood ward-Granger, receiving a II rating-excellent. Some members also worked hard to perform at the Small Group Music Contest at Orinet-Macksburg. These groups are pictured on the previous pages. To finish the year, the chorus sang at baccalaureate and commenement. The Swing Choir is a new addition to AHS. This new group was organized in November and consists of twenty-two members. Some of the members attended a swing choir clinic at Maryville. After much effort on all parts, they have performed at Adair-Casey, the Crestwood Nursing Home, the elementary building, and the Spring Concert. They work hard not only on their songs, but also to work up routines to these songs’ Mr. Dana Harris, Choral Director 46 Swing Choir: Jim Brown, Debbie Krause, DuAnn Ebner, Ed Brown, Deborha Westphal, Shirley Pine, Mark Huff, Kim Miller, Diane Christensen, Warren Brown, Linda Koob, Melanie Cassell, Bobbi Miller, Joni Kaufmann, Becky Barnes, Ronald Porch, Judy Fulk, Mike Carroll. The class of '72' chose this theme and was the host of this year's Junior-Senior Prom. The evening of April 24th began with much excitementl Upon first entering into the Parisian atmosphere, one found himself in a French Boutique in which candy and bonbons decorated the counters. Then, descending down the stone steps of a little garden, he notices the many trees of the park which have been engraved with student's names. Walk- ing through a gaily decorated arbor, he proceeds down the walk, observing the Eiffel Tower, another little park with gay flowers, and white, wrought-iron chairs. There is a spouting water fountain, a little bar and wine cellar, and then, on to the town square! The French cafes, boutiques, and other little shops create the French look and charm. He notes the gay tables for the banquet, decorated with minia- ture poodles, candles, and little Eiffel Towers. Thus was the setting for the biggest social event of the year! Music from the Federal Reserves welcomed the guests while French maidens and chefs entertained and served jun- iors and seniors for the evening meal. They were: Melissa Mehlmann, Jim Mailander, Mary Vanderbur, Dennis Wah- lert, Patti Parker, Rod Watson, Cindy Richter, Alan Ches- nut, Becky Power, John Blazek, Gina Burmeister, and Warren Kelloway. The romance and dreams of Paris were brought to reality and enjoyed by everyone! 54 SUMFUN TEA GARDEN Prom Servers: Debbie Weber, Melanie Cassell, Diane Pollock, Carol Hol- aday, Vicki Vanderbur, Carol Rodgers, Kirk Kelloway, Stan Dorsey, Doug Karns, Dave Schellenberg, Gary Harris 55 PROM 12 Ah, So! Welcome to Japan! This was the greeting offered by the junior class as they sponsored this year's 1972 Prom. Cheery blossoms, picturesque temples and Buddhas, artistically-bridged streams, and the famous sacred mountain of Fujiyama formed definite pictures in the imagination. At the banquet, the welcome was given by Junior Class President Dennis Wahlert and the response by Senior Class President Ed Brown. The sophomore serv- ers performed the skit. A highlight of the evening was the dinner. Served buffet style, everyone helped them- selves to the tasty Japanese dishes of beef cantonese, rice and potatoes, Chinese asparagus, Chinese almond cookies, and tea. Though many tried eating with chop- sticks, they found that the fork was still their favorite eating utensil. Also fortune cookies were passed around-- I wonder if these propheceis ov the evening came true? The class of 73 put a lot of hard work and saved a lot of money on this year's prom by making practically everything themselves. A lot of credit goes to their sponsors. Miss Moeckly and Mr. Burke for making their prom and banquet such a success. 56 4 Talking It Over lust the Two of lls 57 SEVENTH GRADERS ADAPT TO CHANGE Junior High Declam Mark Hansen Patricia Huffman Jeff Jensen Vicki Johnson Bobby Kinzie Jeff Kinzie Leisa Kline Junior High Cheerleaders Delbert Littleton Mark Littleton Becky Marnin Randy Marnin Scott Marnin Peggy Miller Patty Retz Jeff Schaaf Sandy Schuler Re lien Shannon Dawn Spargur Alan Stanley Debra Steffens Richard Thelen Dawn Turner Larry Vais Phyllis Waddell Becky Wahlert Cheri Winther Steve Wessling Junior High Boys Basketball She 11 i Miller Sandy Neighbors Devon Nelson Jody Newell Tina Ohms Annette Raines Ricky Kloppenburg Frank Kopp Cindy Larsen WW. Before the rising sun we fly So many roads to choose We start out walking and learn to run. And yes we've just begun Sharing horizons that are new to us Watching the signs along the way Talking it over just the two of us Working together day to day. Together. And when the evening comes we smile So much of life ahead We'll find a place where there's room to grow And yes we've just begun to live We've only just begun to live. We've only just begun to live.
