NEW COACH CREATES CONFIDENCE ENTHUSIASM Newly acquired head coach Ron Johnson, with assistance from Bob Jackson, revived football at AHS. With victories in their first two games, the SPARTANS’ “winning attitude” brought them 5th place in the con- ference. Offensively, the SPARTANS compiled many impressive statistics. Paul Mailander led the conference in individual receiving by grabbing 33 passes for 398 yards and 3 touchdowns. Mike Johnson led the SPARTANS in rushing carrying the ball 106 times for 603 yards for an average of 5.95 yards per carry. Paul Mailander led the squad defensively by making 71 unassisted tackles. 1971SPARTANETTES COMPLETE VARSITY -Connie Alff, Ruth Barber, Jan Butler. Phyllis Stapleton, Kathy Wahlert, Kay Steele, Nancy Akers, Manager, Mary Kennedy, Manager. Vickie Bernhardt, Wanda Harris, Rita Sullivan. Peg Harris, Melva Walters, Becky Karns, Charolctte Boysen, Helen Baylor, Diane Kluever. Janice Petersen, Manager. For the first time in Little 8 history, the Spartanettcs, coached by Glenn Hartley and Tom Rhodes, captured the Little 8 Title with a 14-0 record. The Spartanettcs, win- ning 16 straight games broke the 1963 winning streak by 2. They also set a new high scoring record of 92. In the Lenox Christmas Tournament, the Spartanettcs defeated Villisca and Lenox to take home their first trophy. Kay Steele, elected the most valuable player of the Lenox Tournament, ranked 5th in the state in field goals with 65% and led the Conference in free throws and field goal percentages. Filling out the forward court were Phyllis Stapleton and Kathy Wahlert, noted for their unique set- shots, layups, rebounds, and assists. Kathy was ranked 2nd in the Conference in field goal percentages. In the guard court, Connie Alff broke the school rebound record in one game with 21. Ruth Barber and Jan Butler aided Connie with their hustle, ball control, and steals which added spark to the club.
