THE CASE OF THE ELUSIVE IDEA ONCE UPON A TIME there was an Idea The trouble was It was a TUQIIIVE DetectIves In the chemlcal Industry they are called researchers were put on IIS traI The Idea was wanted for good reason lt was needed to solve a problem to help fIlI a need At the begInnIng of every step of progress In the chemrcal Industry IS such an Idea orten an eIusIve one that requIres paInstakIng study and VlVId ImagInatIon to uncover Eventually thus partlcular Idea was captured Put to work wuth other Ideas t helped solve the problem at hand WhIIe thIs IS obvIously Slmplllylng what goes Into sound chemlcal research the story nevertheless touches upon a basIc portIon of It The search for Ideas IS a serIaI story whuch never ends In Dow research laboratorIes and pIIot plants Sometlmes Ideas that are found turn out to be cases of mlstaken Identuty When that happens and researchers lIve wIth the reaIIzatIon that It wIlI happen often the search CONTINUES for the elusnve Ideas that are the rught ones Only one thIng IS certaun eventually they wIlI be found In Dow and Its Texas DIVISION thus search for new Ideas has found new vIqor year after year The record shows thus For Instance more than II per cent of the Texas DIvIsIons current productlon capacuty IS geared to products It was not malong fIve years ago ApproxImately 30 per cent of the Texas DIvIsIons current capacIty IS for products that were no made here a decade ago All of these new products are by no means revolutnonary Some have been produced prevlously In other parts of the chemIcal Industry But the fact remalns that all of the Texas DIVISION versIons were generated by Ideas There IS ample evIdence that the search for new Ideas and new products IS stIIl growlng In 1958 for Instance a number of Texas DIvIsIon employees saw a test tube dIsplay of more than 200 potentIaI Dow products that range many frontIers SOME OF THESE wIll never see the marketplace Others wIII become new products Whatever happens to them IndIvIdually together they and the countless new Ideas they represent are lufes blood to Dow and IIS Texas DIVISION THE DOW CHEMICAL COMPANY Texas DIvIsIon FREEPORT . , , - I - - , , . ,I , , . . , .
