, 73 i? 932 Angelo State University took on a new adventure in the 1973-74 school year with an institution of noncredit, evening-scheduled classes to enable students to learn during leisure time. Such activities as sailboating, scuba diving, needlepoint, dirt bike riding, powder puff mechanics, backpacking weaving, guitar, photography and can- dle-making brought on the new look at ASU. Angelo State University saw the fighting Rams come to a halting dead-lock with two out-of-state teams in their first two games ofthe season. On September 8 the Rams took on Central State of Oklahoma and cinched a 7-7 tie as a last-minute touchdown was called back on the Rams and two late field goal attempts failed. On the Ftam's second possession of the game, Gary Olivio flipped a short pass to Nathan Mathis at the 35-yard line. Mathis sped 65 yards down the right sideline for the only Ram touch- down. The 7-O score stood until mid- way in the third quarter when CSO's Johnny Eastep hit paydirt from three yards out. The extra point was good, and the game ended with a 7-7 tie. ln their second game ofthe 1973 season, the Rams cinched a 15-15 tie with the University of Nebraska Mavericks. The Rams went ahead for a short time when Charley Franklin and added talent of teammate Mike Goodgion boosted the team to a nar- row 7-6 lead. The Mavericks then took over and led until late in the fourth quarter when the out-of-state visitors collected eight points.

Henderson taught her class of 15 the creative ways of needlepoint. An ASU stu- dent, Stuart Shelton, conveyed sailboating. Dr. Preston Darby, San Angelo physician, instructed scuba diving and the objectives in safety. Assistant professor of mathematics, Dr. Jay Amburgey, headed the class of dirt bike riding in the fall. During the spring term, Dr. Amburgey instructed the infor- mal backpacking classes. Marvin Fillips taught the 15 girls in his class the basics ot auto mechan- ics. Mrs. Hood Dendy showed her class the decorative art of weav- ing. The beginning lessons in gui- tar were demonstrated by ASU students under Johnnie Bitters. A campus photographer and stu- dent, Chuck Maier, showed tech- niques in a photography class. Bubba Neligh headed the candle- making course. Don Burke, assistant director of the Houston Harte University Cen- ter, said the response was tremen- dous. Burke commented on the situation with l think it is exciting to broaden the reaches of the stu- dents, to bring them an added appreciation, a joy, ot everything around. 25
