line arts begins production with wittg comedies. historical drama Comedy was the keynote of the Angelo State University Department of Fine Arts' productions as it opened its season with Black Comedy, written by Peter Shaffer. This pro- duction used the reverse principle, where the stage was darkened only when the cast members were sup- posed to be visible. The action began when the main fuse of a London apartment blew. From this point, everything happened. Preceeding Black Comedy was a short student adaptation of Anton Chekov's The Marriage Proposal. This one-act play was adapted by ASU drama students to fit the West Texas decor. The Town They Left Behind Them, written, directed, and pro- duced by Dr. Ray Carver, head of the fine arts department, was the next production. A cast of twenty- six actors played 133 roles, ranging from post commander to traders and Indians and re-enacted life at Old Fort Concho and in early San Angelo. ,-44 -.W Q3 A' AJ .x, . A ,- Catherine Cowell and Berne Enslin presented a collection of poems ln staging as well as direction, Ann JeIlicoe's The Knack was an intimate play. Performed predomi- nately on an improvised stage in front of and about two feet lower than the main stage, the comedy brought its intense action closer to the audience. The lives, loves, and frustrations of its characters, a closely knit group of one girl and three young men, formed the basis of this d y n a m i c contemporary comedy. Lovers and Madmen was a faculty Reader's Theatre production. adapted by Mrs. Cowell. This col- lection expressed the greater sensi- tivity of poets, or madmen, some- times true to reality. The second theatre production was adapted by Miss Helen Schafer from George Herman's A Company of Wayward Saints. A troop of actors, in attempting to persuade the Duke to be their patron saint, perform for him the history of man from creation to death. Nancy, portrayed by Sharon Houck, notices that Ken Stinnet as Tolen has a certain knack when it comes to girls. Tom QWade Mayerj and Colin fWaymon Berryhillj are busy studying a map of the city fupper rightj. During the play The Knack, Nancy, a country girl who has come to the city, lets Tolen and Colin know exactly how .she feels fupper lefty. Nancy fearfully evades a pass made by Tolen, a self-confident ladies' man, as Tom looks on flower rightl.
