Men and Women for Career of Nursing Upon recommendation of the Coordinating Board, Texas College and University System, Angelo State began action in the spring of 1967 to establish a two-year associate degree program in nursing education. On February 1, 1968, Mrs. Elizabeth Jones became director of the proposed nursing program, and February 5, the Educational Secretary for the Board of Nurse Examiners visited Angelo State and outlined requirements for initial accreditation of the proposed nurs- ing program. Angelo State's program was approved in Sep- tember, 1968 by the Coordination Board, Board of Regents, State Senior Colleges, and the State Board of Nursing as an accredited program which would prepare men and women for eligibility to take the examinations given by the Board of Nurse Examiners for licensure as Registered Nurses. The nursing faculty believes that the technical com- petence of the associate degree nurse depends upon both knowledge and skill, and that these can best be learned by planned teaching-learning experiences shared by students and faculty. The intellectual stimulation and social partici- tt. il,-: :I.3,: -.....,, pation in the college community combined with instructor- guided acquisition of nursing skills in hospitals ensures opportunities for the student to develop as a person, as a citizen, and as a nurse. The object of the Nursing Program is to prepare men and women for eligibility to take the examinations given by the Board of Nurse Examiners for licensure as Registered Nurses. Students are prepared upon graduation and licensure for employment in positions which require giving direct nursing care to patients. Mrs. Elizabeth Jones is acting director of Angelo State's two-year associate degree nursing program which consists of some 58 nursing students. Ten new courses and 6 new teachers were organized as a supplement to the College's existing science and liberal arts curriculum for the benefit of nursing students. ln addition to class work, the students spend many hours in lab and do clinical work in local hospitals.
