Ten professors and twenty-two secondary and elementary assistants in teacher education plant within prospective teachers the inspiration for challenging young minds. The departmenfs tirst responsibility is the education of teachers for Seventh-day Adventist schools. To in- crease the efficiency and effectiveness of teacher educa- tion, curriculums are being reorganized, and a curricu- lunt room is being developed in the James White Library. About four thousand books in education were added to the library last year: the staff of teachers of education has been increased each of the past sev- eral years. r The Teacher Education Council formed a year ago, is a continuing body to constantly survey teacher education and recommend needed improvements and developments. The course work of three hundred students in the department of chemistry is directed by four qualified professors. The growth of the department has kept pace with that of the undergraduate division in personnel, in course offerings, and in the equipment needed for effective work. Undergraduate research has had vigorous support under the auspices of the depart- ment as attested to by a number of bound reports, some of which have been pub- lished. Present projects include research to- ward the isolation of coenzyme A from a strain of yeast, and a study of the metabo- lism of valeric acid by homogenates of beef liver, both of these being under the supervision of Dr. Don Halenz. Dr. Dwain Ford is directing attempts toward the reducing of quinone systems in polcyclic aromatic compounds and analyses con- nected with metabolism studies on humans.
