These young men have the benefit of theoretical training under quali- fied teachers as well as practical training through connection with the university farm. The department features three phases of agriculture: the dairy, gardens, and field crops. One hundred forty-two head of cattle, a modern milking parlor and processing plant, 350, acres of tillable ground, and a large greenhouse area com- prise the largest laboratory on campus from which flow high quality milk products, garden produce, and a variety of flowers for market. Through this department are filled de- mands for farm managers, government workers, teachers, and specialists in many lines. Practical farm experience. The art department, di- rected by Mr. lrvin Althage, offers varied materials and experience to the art student working toward a teaching position or another endeavn or of his choice. The artist works in varied mediums: pen, pencil, crayon, oil, water colors, and in the case of individual projects, even such specialized mediums as fresco and mosaics. Design problems materialize in scale, full-size and when feasible, working models. ln clay modeling and ceramics, the art student designs and molds his own projects. The host of laboratory classes yields two lecture courses, Survey of Art and Nineteenth and Twentieth Century Art. Through these the student traces art from its distant, primitive beginnings to its present state of expression and gains ac- quaintance with the greatest artists and works of the ages. 12
