PROPHECY Th1s was a parncularly bad road The dust settled on the open slde of the truck the fhes were endless 1n number and countless nn pursuxt Sometrmes we Vonnle and I had vague 1Tl1SQ,lVlHgS about th1s tr1p At f1rst we were overloyed at the prospect of travehng through the U S at no obvtous expense except that of a ch1cken truck whrch we purchased at the prrce of 1 song It came to us on th1s partxcularlv hot d ay on th1s particularly bad road the humrd a1r pxerced w1th muffled squawks from the back of the truck that we had overlooked somethmg somewhere It wasn t the rapld vlbratlon of the truck over the unpaved hrghway we chose to travel It wasnt our partlcular form or lxvehhood selhng eggs from door to door It wasnt even we dtscovered our httle feathered charges tn the back It was yust those darn flles The precedrng paragraph would be of no conse quent mterest to anvone nf lf were not for the serxes of events whlch took place this summer of 1960 We stopped one day IU August 10 4 small town tn Ohlo ITOPIHE that we and our wares would be well recexved Our fxrst stop was a neat lookrng w hrte house near the edge of town We got safely through the front glte wnthout any assault from the loctl constable FRAN RONCAI LI md knocked at the neat whnte door We were met by a barrage of small freckled faces and behmd them complete rn apron and yust as many freckles was none other than SHIRLEY HOPTON We were so surprrsed and pleased that 1n a moment of reckless comrade shlp we offered her three of our best pullets and a whole basket of eggs Shlrley was a graclous hostess xntroduced us to the three l1ttle rephcas and then we were off to parts unknown Suddenlv r1r1ng of the country we veered off our course and headed steadrly 1f not gracefully toward the clty There we mapped out a campa1gn to cover the hrghhghts that xs famous landmarks and places of h1stor1cal 1nterest Frrst we stopped at the famous Falamor Ltboratory whose gllldlflg hght has been for the past few years the emment sc1ent1st PAT BERRY Amazed to see old frxends nn among the whlte m1ce we notlced her able asslstant MARGIE HARKNESS who had an able assrstant BARBARA HARTMANN who had an Yes and then theres SHIRLEY GOWER who IS chnef cook and bottle washer th xt ns next to BETTY PROKOP who has no equal rn the field of pots and pans leaving the Falamor laboratory we found a nearby parkrng lot ln whlch to leave the truck We saw the two attendants swagger toward us so we swaggered a httle m return The swagger ended on the part of both part1es when recogmtron set 1n ANDREA WHITE md MARIORIE STRUNK stared at us nn drsmay as we advanced When we had exchanged sob stor1es Vonnle and I learned that the Wall Street crash m 57 had not caused them to follow the1r strrcken assoclates most of whom barled out of fue story wrndows ln grett numbers They most naturally grautated tow ard the next best profess1on keeper of the parklng lot Llfe IS no bowl of cherr1es we told them snatchlng at some condolence Ah but Maryorre was not to be consoled for we heard her say that she and Andy really l1ke thrs type of work Wie mumbled someth1ng about nusconstrued aptrtude tests and ambled off Our f1rst stop we declded would be Farnegle Hall We met PAT FORBES comxng down the steps of the famous burldmg In her wake were Gene and Patty She told us that thev had Just left Gene senror who was busy m1k1ng engagements for h1s orchestra Thats wonderful we sa1d Who s at Farnegxe Hall at present?
