When the constitution of the State of Texas was drawn up, the surplus lands around the state were set aside in the name of public schools. ln l902, the first sale of this land was held . . . and for the first time much of the West Texas land was sold. In this soon-to-be county, the first purchase was made for three sections at Sl per acre. Rugged individualists bought the open plains by the thousands of acres . . . and by 7910, when the county was organized, 975 people were living here. The good earth was the only source of livelihood. Farmers and ranchers began fencing the land, grazing the open spaces, tilling the soil, and-in short- changing the sand-covered county into an agricultural area.
