BALLAD OF ANDREW LEWIS Our school ballad we begin, To you this song we bring, Our life at Andrew Lewis We proudly now will sing. Of classes, clubs, and sports, too, Our teachers are a part. Our dances and assemblies, We’ll cherish in our hearts. Oh, Andrew Lewis, school adored, Our song begins this way. Your tune we carry with us, As we journey through each day. Exams we shall never Be able to forget. Our Friday morn devotions We relinquish with regret. In ’32 this song began, These halls built, young lives to mold. From Andrew Lewis our name we took, A man of leadership, strong and bold. At pep assemblies ’fore the game, The cheerleaders lead yells, The band plays the songs we love, As the Lewis spirit swells. He fought for life and liberty, With his mightly strength and powerful build. His name echoes o’er the land he loved, Our hearts with admiration for him are filled. Our life at Andrew Lewis We’ll cherish through the years, When time comes to leave these halls We’ll depart with smiles and tears. He fought the last Indian; a great soldier As a general led the fight for the free, Although born in Ireland in seventeen four, A true Virginian, we do all agree. He died of illness in seventeen eighty-one, A monument at East Hill Cemetery now marks his grave, He looks o’er the town and valley he loved, A patriotic Virginian, stronghearted, and brave. —
MRS. ETHEL SHOCKEY In ’28 to Salem High On old Broad Street you came, To love, to teach, to guide, inspire, To bring honor and fame. When the cornerstone for A. L. was laid, A fierce, cold blizzard raged; But you calmly raised your baton high And brave voices rose in praise. A teacher, skilled in many fields, Though Math you love the best, For thirty years, you’ve given us Your love and interest. Guidance director you have been; You coached the debating team, The team which won State Championship, Which is every debater’s dream. We thank you for your loving heart, Your humor and your smile, Your patience, competence, and skill Which have made our work worth while. So now, Mrs. Ethel Shockey, In this your final year, We proudly dedicate to you, The ’58 Pioneer. DEDICATION
