MR. E. B. BROADWATER Principal Throughout the pages of the Pioneer this year, the reader may trace the theme, “ Sports.” Sports, if they accomplish their purpose in a school, will enable students to reach two goals which all youth holds dear, a strong body and a fine spirit. Noble spirit and good sportsmanship are synonymous. The youth who by nature or by home training possesses a fine spirit, easily adjusts his actions to the principles of good sportsmanship. The influence of these rules of action develops in his associates the same fine spirit that he has shown. Who is a good sport? Though it is difficult to describe him, every student knows his characteristics. They are respect for authority, consideration for the opponent in a contest, ability to meet victory without “malicious exultation” or to take defeat without grouchiness, and a will to be courteous at all times. The good sport may not be the star on the team. His name may not fill the headlines of the sports page. He is known, however, for his real worth. He is the ideal of every student in his school. In years to come, he will be in their memories a fixed and brilliant star serving as a guide to fine spirit and better sportsmanship. E. B. Broadwater
