Jai., Me Cwfaf BJ cory cou today look upon our school which hears his name, and examine its growing traditions, he would he gruiiiy pleased torecognize our endeavors to perpetuate many of his most cherished and commendahie ideals. Jacksons hiographer, Marquis James. says of him: Whatever the flaws in the character of Andrew Jackson, vaciuation, untrustvvorthi- ness and disioyaity were not among them .... Qniy the puhiic wehcare took precedence over the needs of a friendf, it in your four years at Andrew Jackson you have somewhat developed that degree of constancy which made Old Hickory admired hy hoth friend and toeg if you have huiit up For yourselves a reputation for trustvvorthiness such as every employer rates the most desirahie characteristic in an employee, and if the general concept of loyalty has hecome part of your make-up, you already have acquired assets which win prove invaiuahie for success in your next un- dertaking, whatever that may he. ' in ciass discussion, assemhiy programs, ciuh work, service groups, plays, athletic contests, and in community activities many opportunities have heen af- forded you to show leadership and decisiong to develop courage, self-reliance, steadiness, and trustworthinessg and to demonstrate unseliish loyalty to your class-mates, teachers, school, and country. As you peer into the future through your crystal giohe, may it he this enduring SPIRIT OF JACKSON that meets and holds your confident gaze. i RALPH n LER

f if 4 3 . 1 ' ' tilflif T? ' Y JN .1 X we .giairif 0 Todayss every action and thought is hinged on world events. Unfor- tunately, the nature of these affairs seems to induce, especially in the inex- perienced youth of the nation, a shattering of ideals, a dampening of spirit, and even a cessation of hope. Why then harp constantly on a topic so alien to our aspirations? Nvhy oft repeat ideas that lead to an incuication of cynicism and a devastating prematuring of the mind? Admittedly, youth, as such, has heen too little played up. Who, if anyone, has more right to hring it into the limelight than youth itself? It is with this in mind that we ahandon our tradition of hasing our puhii- cation on the outside world and replace it with a theme of Alma Mater. But the words Alma Mater conjure up a stereotype of ivy covered walls, grim fore- hoding exteriors and frowning, solemn hails, which taken as a whole lack an air of reality. Surely nothing with life could he developed of such a beginning. Therefore, we must renovate the old maudiin interpretation with an its haughty ideals and add that we consider Alma Mater to signify the spirit of the school, which is revealed through the students. in this iight, an account of the Alma Spirit of this schooi would have to include the activities, local views, witticisms, half-vvitticisms, and local reactions of the Jaclcsonites, or in short, it would have to he a log of student functions. Therefore, it is in the capacity of hiographer of Andrew Jackson High School that We hopefully oiijer-the Spirit of Jaclcsonf' X
