W Q' qj encor It was way back in January, 1937, that a group of lusty barbarians, now reverentiy Icnown by au tower ciassmen as The Seniorsf, arrived to gaze with awe-stricken eyes at the inspiring heights of Jamaica High School.. There midst high aspirations and the hoary traditions of the school of Red and Blue, we began our high school careers. We were, however, treated like grammar school chiidrenfhandied with a cold, austere efficiency by everyone from sophomores to juniors. Seniors, then as now, handled only sophomores and juniors with cold, austere efficiency. Some sort of corollary to the Stim- son Doctrine prevented them from recognizing that freshmen existed. Then, four months iater we were switched to the far hills of St. Albans and were delivered to our shining new building, which was stiu in its ceuo- phane wrapper. It was not long before a husthng student body got the school under way. he Hickory Log was startedg our school colors were selected by the fresh- an class, Ha rotting foo gathered no goong and Mr. Vierteiys General Science e ass hnany found a room with seats and desks. Double sessions started to alce way for a rapidly growing enrollment. Before we turned sophomore, clcson had a G. 0. constitution. At that time, we often wondered where our school newspaper and maga- th ugh the halts looking important. We also wondered how guards aiways se ed to know when we had no han passes and why they seemed to arrest on f freshmen. After a year in the yoke of the oppressed, we came to wonder iess and Im w more. in fact, we wondered iittie and knew wondrous much. in other w ds. we were sophomores. Then, with a year of high school under our belts, and those new-tangled e r jackets on our backs, we began to join clubs and meet other sophomores. ce in a white, in a purely academic and impersonal manner, a junior would '1 tuauy listen to fand Chuckie overj our opinions on some matter. Jacksons sports were organized with a swimming team, baseball and asicetban squads showing excellent promise. XV e sophs had such material o offer as Johnny Vxfeir, Joe Maloney and Ed Hubert.
