The best thing about our school is the friendships we have made. Andrean is a melting pot. Our friends come from all over Northwest Indiana and all over the world. Because of their diverse backgrounds, they bring us new social attitudes and new ideas. We have learned to adapt to different views and to share our ideas and concerns. We grow as people, and our friends are a big influence. We are different, better people because of the times we have shared with our friends. What happens after high school? Four years go by quickly, and we won ' t remember every fact we ever learned, but we will remember the good times we shared with our friends. We must hang onto those memories, for they ' re the things that will make us smile down the road, not remembering which state first ratified the Constitution (unless, of course, it ' s the answer to the Final Jeopardy question for $25,000). Good luck in all your endeavors. Bob Eck P.S. By the way, Delaware was the first state to ratify the Constitution. Their 16-5 finish is the best ever to be held by an AHS softball team. Lady Niners were ranked tenth in a preseason coaches ' poll, but fell to eighteenth after a 6-3 opening loss to Crown Point. Immediately following the loss, they rallied to a twelve game winning streak. Victories were captured by narrow margins against rival contenders, including Portage, Chesterton, Hobart, and Valparaiso. The season was highlighted by a second consecutive undefeated sweep of the Viking Invitational. Also, after winning a 6-2 battle over sixth- ranked Lake Central, Coach Rev. Joe Lanzalaco said, This win proves we can play with the big kids. The team rotated three senior pitchers with leadership from catcher Jennifer Martin from behind the plate. Pitcher Laura Bianchi allowed the fewest walks, while Jenny Potter hurled the most strike-outs and Heather Rakoczy maintained the lowest earned run average. Although the team fell to Valparaiso in the Sectional, a season with three times as many wins than losses could not be taken from the record books. Four players, Nora Fagen, Jennifer Martin, Jenny Potter, and Heather Rakoczy, were four year veterans. Names Somewhere , what with all these clouds, and all this air, there must be a rare name somewhere ... β Aristophanes Andrean, as a matter of fact, has 324 of them. 324 Andrean students (about one-third of the student body) share their first names with no other student. From Ariel to Willard, Anise to Zandra, Andrean is full of one-of-a- kind students with one-of-a-kind names. But the originality of the Andrean student doesn ' t end there. Eight girls here share the same name, for example, but they don ' t agree how to spell it β is it Kellee, Kelley, Kelli, or Kelly? Girls on the average tend to show more variety with names. 37% of Andrean girls share their names with no other student, as compared to the 28% of Andrean boys in that same category. And what of the other 658 students who aren ' t part of this group, the ones whose names must be considered ordinary ? All of these so-called ordinary names may have been created equal, but at Andrean some are definitely more equal than others. Andrean has, for instance, 42 Jennifers β by far the most popular name of the student body. Michaels and Mikes together form the second most popular group, with a total of 30 students sharing that name. On the average, in every group of 25 girls two will be named Jennifer, and in a group of 25 boys at least one (if not two) will probably be named Mike. Other popular girls ' names are Michelle (13 students), Lisa (12), Kimberly (11), and Amy (11). For the boys, John (25 students) is the second most common name. Also popular are the names Brian (18), Robert (12), and Timothy (11). The old standards, of course, aren ' t gone: many students are named after the Evangelists and martyrs. Traditional old John and Mary, however, will eventually have to make way for Michael and Jennifer β Andrean ' s couple of the ' 90 ' s. β Jennifer DuBois 122 β Album Freshmen Emanuel Medellin Rebecca Molnar Davfd Mostello Terressia Nawrocki Sean Nevils i Stacey Nickoloff Rosiel Christine Ortiz Cynthia Oslawski Ann Marie Owens Heather Paine Victoria Palk Crd ' Nikhil Pargac Justin Pati Hsiulien Per Album β 123 Freshmen Freshmen and juniors display their school spirit during Big Brother Little Brother-Big Sis- ter Little Sister Week. The college students staged sit-ins in Beijing ' s Tiananmen Square protesting corrupt government administration and demanding reforms such as freedom of press and youth involvement in the Politburo. The government proclaimed martial law early in the protest, but students continued to defy the government and demand democracy. A power struggle between Deng Xiaopeng, Li Peng, Chinese prime minister, and Zhao Ziyang, Chinese Communist party leader, made it easier for the students to demand more openly. However, on June 4, the government struggle ended and the People ' s Army attacked the unarmed students killing up to two thousand. Benazir Bhutto Benazir Bhutto caused an immediate sensation by becoming the first female leader of Pakistan. Feminists were taken aback, however, when Radcliffe grad Bhutto agreed to an arranged marriage in an effort to silence her detractors. In July Democrats held their convention and chose Michael Dukakis, Governor of Massachusetts, as their Presidential nominee. Dukakis nationalized his party ' s ticket by naming Lloyd Bentsen of Texas as his Vice- Presidential nominee. In August Republicans nominated George Bush as Presidential candidate. In a surprise move Bush picked Dan Quayle, Senator from Indiana, as Vice President. The fall campaign which began the day after Labor Day was, some say, the worst smear campaign ever. Such subjects as the Pledge of Allegiance and Willy Horton overshadowed the important issues of the debt, the savings and loan crisis, and nuclear weapons. Michael Dukakis and Dan Quayle were personally attacked many times during the campaign, Dukakis for possible psychological problems and Quayle for his alleged stupidity and naivete. On November 8 Americans elected George Bush and Dan Quayle President and Vice-President of the United States. The Seventies Like a recurring nightmare, Seventies tastes and fashions reappeared in full force. Wildly printed ties, larger collars, ana wider-cuffed pants resurfaced, as did longer hair for men and women. The Bee Gees and Donny Osmond charted musical comebacks, as progressive bands covered K.C. and the Sunshine Band hits, and T.V. classics like Mission: Impossible were resurrected. The Art Institute of Chicago The Art Institute of Chicago came under fire for displaying Scott Tyler ' s work, ' What is the Proper Way to Display a U.S. Flag? The exhibit featured a book in which museum-goers could record their answers after walking across an American flag spread upon the floor. Summer Olympics The 1988 Summer Olympics was held for the first time in Seoul, Korea. The United States produced a fair amount of personalities. Showy Florence Griffith-Joyner and her sister-in- law Jackie Joyner-Kersee dominated track and field events. Muscular Matt Biondi and petite Janet Evans captured media hearts as well as Olympic swimming gold. Spectators were shocked when American Carl Lewis was awarded the gold medal for the 100 meter run after first place runner Ben Johnson tested positive for steroid use, and many held their breath as diver Greg Louganis returned after hitting his head on the springboard to continue his sweep in the diving events. New uniforms When uniforms were introduced for both boys and girls, many boys objected. The new uniform was an abrupt change from the simple dress code that had been in effect for several years. Many girls, however, favored the new girls ' uniforms over their own grey skirts and embraced Andrean ' s return to Catholic school plaid. Guidance center ' s first year Andrean ' s new guidance center provided students with more opportunities to take advantage of its services. Particularly successful was the National Honor Society ' s tutoring service. Honor Society members were available in the study room or conference room before and after school to provide tutoring in their areas of expertise. Many teachers referred students to the tutoring service whenever students needed additional help with classroom work, and a good number came of their own accord for help with homework. Thanks to generous student response, the Art Club was able to buy enough art supplies to paint two murals for each room of the hospital and donate a Nintendo Game System to the children. Pictured are Roman Perez, Ame Palk, Missy Babicka, Denise Viene, Mr. Listro, John Todd, Geri Tucker, Ted Ciskowski, and Terry Chouinard, who orchestrated the effort. Fundraising Andrean jumped into the fundraising game wholeheartedly. Boxed chocolates, candy bars, M M ' s, and other goodies were in abundance throughout the entire year as different organizations tried to raise funds for their various treasuries. New fundraising ideas included a lunch raffle, sponsored by the boys ' cross country team, where the winners were served fast food by various members of the team. Andrean ' s annual calendar sale offered students the opportunity to earn the privilege of wearing jeans to school for a month. The silver sales gave students the chance to participate in βPie- mania, ' ' a faculty-versus-students pie-throwing contest. Banking on continued Merrillville growth, Chicago Bears coach Mike Ditka opened a Merrillville counterpart of his Ditka ' s restaurant in Chicago, and opening festivities were sponsored by the Andrean ' s Parents ' Club. Personalities, able to cope with the varied realities of life, are created. The essence of this creative process is what we have tried to capture. Having feasted upon the visual memories preserved within these pages, and having gorged ourselves with the recollections of the year. Bert Kullerstrand, Matt Staley, Melissa Negron, and Rodney Thompson bounce out of school after spirit week celebrations. Mike Sur, Tim Swan, Mike Conroy, and Joseph Doyle proudly straighten their morning coats before leading the graduates into Our Lady of Consolation. Terry Chouinard, on assignment from Decussata, strikes his βMr. Photographer pose while covering Junior-Senior dance. Cassie Rozycki and Eric Mihal beam at the thought of the bright future that awaits them after graduation. Rose Martinez, Ralph Torres, John Todd, Jesse Ramos, and Daryle Steffens celebrate a whiffle ball victory at the close of Armageddon. Jeanette Murawski, Colleen Spanopoulos, Michelle Frankovich, Liz Pabon, and Wendy Lewis are all aglow in the warm sunshine. we reflect upon the character and diversity that shape the student body of Andrean, of which this yearbook can present only a taste. Savor and learn from your high school experience, consider the end of this school year a new beginning, and always treasure this taste of Andrean.
