Language is the center of our understanding. We explore plays, stories, poems, and novels as a sampling of our language and culture. Through the analy- sis of what others have written, and an exacting study of gram- mar, usage and composition, the English Department strives to equip students with the essen- tials for self-expression and learning, that is, reading, writ- ing, listening, and speaking. With the growing interde- pendence of nations, commu- nication between different peoples takes on added impor- tance. Through the Language Department’s programs in French, Spanish, German, and Latin, students are given an opportunity to learn to communicate in different lan- guages, to explore the back- ground and culture of differ- ent nations and races.
