THE MATHEMATICS DEPARTMENT Long before Sputnik a strong mathematics department was considered vital at Hanna High. College preparatory students are urged to take Algebra ll, Plane Geometry, and Senior Algebra and Trigonometry. Commercial stu- dents usually take Applied Mathematics, Con- sumer Living, and Advanced Business Arith- metic. At least two units of mathematics are required for graduation. A new mathematics course-Advanced Al- gebra-will be offered beginning 1960. Miss Gladys Cromer: Algebra, Geometry, Dramatics Club Sponsor . . . THE ENGLISH DEPARTMENT The English Department of Hanna High seeks, not only to teach a basic knowledge of English, but also to arouse the interest and apprecia- tion of the student for our native tongue. There are various supplemen- tary devises to aid teachers in their presentation of the courses. The student has an opportunity to hear Macbetb, AIIHKOIZE, and other poetic and dramatic selections read by well-qualified speakers. Records for vocabulary development are also extensively used. For the girl who desires extra help or needs practice in addition to classwork, drill work- books are kept in supply. Out faculty recognizes that creative work is necessary to offer the student a well-rounded, balanced English course. Creative writing is en- couraged by many and varied contests, and lucrative rewards add special attraction to the competition. The S. C. FOREIGN LANGUAGES The Language Department of Hanna High consists of a second-year Latin course and a three-year French course. Under Miss Elizabeth McCown's instruction, the Latin stu- dents study, not only the language of ancient Rome, but also Roman civilization. Recordings are used to improve the stu- dents' pronunciationg filmstrips, projects. and parallel further their knowledge of human culture, The French courses, taught by Mrs. Carl Epting and Mrs. Gene Metz, stress aural-oral method of learning foreign lan- guage. The aural-oral method is based upon the natural process of language learning-hearing hrst, then speaking, then later reading and writing. To implement the process of hearing and speaking French extensive use is made of tapes and records so that the students will be exposed, not only to the teachers pronunciation, but also to that of native Frenchmen. A different series of films is presented each year in order to enrich the stu- dents in French traditions, history, culture, and geography. SOCIAL STUDIES DEPARTMENT The Social Studies Department of Hanna High offers five courses: World History, United States History, Geography, United States Government, and Psychology. World History, open to sophomores, is a study of the great civilizations of the world. United States History, usually taken by Juniors. is a required subject at Hanna High. United States Government. which is re- quired of Seniors, is a study of our nation's administrative system. It may also be classi- Q'L'T , . . . fied as a course in citizenship. Psychology, the science of human be- havior, gives us a basic knowledge of how to achieve a sound, wholesome, mature life.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION DEPARTMENT At Hanna High there are no intermural sports. However, the intramural sports, such as our annual basketball and table tennis tournaments, are enthusiastically supported. One year of gym is required, usually of sophomores. In gym the girls learn to play field hockey, volley ball, basketball, table tennis, calisthenics, shuliie board, softball, and folk dancing. This year a testing system has been added. The girls are graded on their skill, attitude, promptness, and appearance. COMMERCIAL DEPARTMENT The commercial and distributive education students are kept busy through a combination of classwork and practical experience. The students taking secretarial courses are Hanna Highs unofficial secretaries. They mt stencils, type programs, letters, announcements, booklets, and serve as typists for the student publications-HANNASGALS and TIDINGS. Retailing is one of the more important characteristics of Distributive Education. The participating seniors gain experience and knowledge through an actual job. HOME ECONOMICS DEPARTMENT Home Economics is offered to sophomores, and Family Living to seniors. In Home Economics construction and care of clothing, textiles, nutrition, meal plan- ning, table setting, food preparation, selection and arrangement of furniture, and use of color are studied. The curriculum in Family Living covers infant care, child development, management in the home, selection and preparation of family meals, clothing construction, and marriage and family relations.
