Anderson, 47: Bedford, 43. Ns Basketball 5:1 .wigg- -' A finderso n. 33, Acadia, 10. The 1923-24 basketball season has been the most successful A. H. has witnessed for several years, Coach Staggs had but four men left from last year with which to build this year's team. In the past years Anderson has had only one team which was its superior such as Franklin and Vincennes but this year A. H. lead tl1e field according to the sport writers of many Indiana papers. Anderson defeated every team she met at least once during the season. The standard of sports- manship attained by the fans helped the team to achieve an en- viable' record. Although A. H. S. loses live members of the team by gradua- tion the prospects for a winning team next year are very bright. The schedule and scores for the season were: Anderson, 37g Bedford, -11. ' Anderson 34 Brownsburg, 27. Anderson, 533 Manual, 20, Anderson, 51 Lapel, 21. Anderson, 41: Connersville, 32. Anderson 23: Broad Ripple, I7 Anderson, 471 Huntington, 27. DISTRICT ' The district tournament held in the A. H. S. gym on February 29 and March 1 was a success with many good games on the schedule. Ten teams of this district were represented, namely, Pendleton. Summitville, Lapel. Markleville. Elwood, Frankton, Vlindfall, Tipton, Alexandria and Anderson. The outcome was never in doubt but the contest proved thrilling in the extreme in many instances, And- erson mct Lapel in their first game, then Pendltton, and Alexandria and lastly, defeated Elwood in the final game on Saturday night. REGIONAL and STATE - Anderson had easy going in the regional meet held at Earlham College, Rich- mond, March 7 and 3. Anderson's two opponents were Stoney Creek and Mt. Com- fort and the scores were as follows: Anderson 45. Stoney Creek 14: Anderson 28, Mt Fomfort 12. The State contest was heart breaking. Anderson went to the State in high hopes and not without reason. Slie was .ll?fl5FCfl bv leading sport critics as the best team in the state and was given first in many big ten lists. Consequently when she was defeated, she fell hard. although the old Indian spirit never was lacking and although she was defeated in basketball. she was victorious in spirit. In the initial game of Anderson's scheduled round at Indianapolis the fighting Indians met defeat at the hands of the Bedford five. 35-24 on Friday afternoon, March 14. lniuries which our team were nursing at the time was attributed by many as the cause for our defeat. However, ouoting Staggs, XVe do not offer ali- hiesf' The score savs we were defeated and that is all there is to the story, but that famous. never-dying spirit lives on and will continue to live. Next year will find the Anderson High School basketball team maintaining that same fight and loyalty to A. H. S. 'We, the class of 1924, wish our Alma Mater the best of success is this field of athletics and pledge our everlasting support to the Red and Green. 92
