West. During his eight years as superintendent he has shown a deep concern for the development of the young peo- ple in this area and has provided outstanding leadership in the advancement of all phases of the educational program of the Forest Hills School District; We, however7 will remember Mr. West, not as a remote and impersonal administrator, but as a friend with whom we could enjoy the various social events of the school. He cheered at our athletic victories and grieved with us at our defeats. He felt every tense, as well as amusing, moment of the dramatic productions. He attended every vocal or instrumental concert. His participation at school dances made him a friend to all. we were happy to know he cared enough about us to participate in the social, as well as in the business, affairs of the school. We want to wish Mr, West success in his new oHice as Assistant Superintendent of Hamilton County Schools, and we are glad that he will be coming to visit us m HCTSChel DA WESt often: we hope - in the future. Assistant Superintendent Hamilton County Schools A Word cf Welcome We knew only that he , . . SWas born in 1923 in Wilson, Arkansas? iispent six years in the United States Navy in World War Hf: iigraduated from St. Louis University in 1952 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in business adminis- trationfi gieamed his Masteris Degree from Xavier Univer- sity in 1959:: ;was Assistant Superintendent for two years in the West Clermont Schools and was Superintendent in Williamsburg for three yearsfl This is what he had done before he came to Anderson W'e watched and wondered what he would do for us. He came to Anderson with the belief that his most im- portant job was to supervise projects already started and to see that they were completed as intended. He also had plans for development in two major academic areas e our guidance department and an adult education pro- gram. As the year progressed; we watched the fulfill- Robert Gofonh ment of his plans and learned to respect and admire Superintendent him. We at Anderson welcome our new superintendent, Forest Hills Schools Robert Goforth. ADMINISTRA TION Martha E. Silver Secretary Jane Norton Stenographer Forest Hills Board of Education. It is its own small world. - Our story is different. It is the story of many books. It is many worlds in one behind the high: silver lettering, ciAnderson Senior High School? Here in one short year many lives grow, many minds meet. Ours is a world of books which we try to picture in this one book. It is a world of minds from many centuries speaking in our century. Through our teachers they open their thoughts and experiences to us Our story is of moods, expressions. Here one will see the pensive and the exuberant, hard work and concentration. The difficult is made interesting; the achievements become an inspiration. Here is found study, intensity. The hash of school spirit and light flooding into our many-windowed main corridor is matched by the light in eyes of sudden understanding. Our tools are books and buildings, teachers and tests, our wits and our wonderingsV To our curiosity teach- ers bring their creativity in the hope that in this world, new worlds may be discovered, Even in an empty building with teachers and students gone, one may come sud- denly upon a room of resting books, and the heart of our story comes alive. COMING TO SCHOOL In one of the most severe winters on record, the familiar entrance greets the student every morning. We wake to the opening of a new chap- ter or a testing on an old one. At these moments we are seldom aware of the larger goals; only that school is open again, and we hope we have studied the right questions. THROUGH THE SNOW Snow gleams in the sun on our campus, and someone has taken a new direction beyond the shoveled walks. For a moment we may wonder whether, using the landmarks of study and discipline: we may End our own way from the world of Anderson. M OMEN TS OF REFLECTION Waiting at the stairs before class, students carry books almost noncha- lantly. Some take a moment to scan the displays prominent in the cor- ridor. These are the moments, also, to reflect on yesterdaygs exams, tomorrowk assignments and the method for handling crutches after an early foot- ball practice. The design of building and lighting often keeps our eyes moving upward. 10 11 Students are seen curiously watching the photographer through the class room door. These boys and girls now go to the new Wilson School. The concept of balance is not restricted to architectme. One might suspect that a baainced curriculum might not always be a subject of student thought. Library Conference Room The cafeteria: conference room for special news, discussions on everything under the sun , . . and a place to eat lunch. OUR STORTHAS MANTSETTINGS The attractiveness of the main corridor, with its Since we pass through every day, we are not always plants exposed to natural light, invites us to school. aware of the vitality and warmth of the setting. 0113. and Carol discuss the dafs assignments. Students $nd Mr. Titus and his office staff ready to answer kheir questions, and, perhaps. arrange for a schedule change. 13 Friendly, informally; students share their views and discuss their reactions to the. days work. 14 S USPENDED ANIMA TION Both the mobile display and the students5 minds seem to move in the interplay of teacher, student, and subject. Our story in pictures catches some of the creativity by teachers and the concentration by students, Whether it be classroom or corridor, lecture or discussion, the hard work of study goes on. Geometry students, in deep thought, are caught behind the graphic illustration of their subject CONCENTRA TION Paul Schueneman makes alcohol from fermented molasses. Science and math: language and literature, social studies and busi- ness education are some of the absorbing interests of every day. Often: Andersonians are so caught up in the excitement of discovery: or in preparing for examinations: that they can resist the intrusion of a photographer or the noise of a group talking just down the hall. Approach of mid-term examinations is evidenced by crowd- ed library. I5 IN CLASSES We work, using the techniques of dis- cussion, visuai aidsJ textbooks and li- brary resources . . . to seek better ways of finding facts and communicating ideas. Teachers work constantly to Fmd new ways, and to improve old ways, to pre- sent the subjects assigned to them. One of the problems is the ever- Changing and growing knowledge in many Helds. Students are encouraged through assigned research subjects to ex- plore these for themselves. M1: Norton presents basic principles of electricity. AS INDIVID UALS Hard work at a good dictionary is often necessary to prepare one for the language in a given Held of knowledge, One must do this for himself, alone, in the quietness 0f the library. The work of Gdigging 01155 the facts is a very important part of remem- bering. Preparing for research papar, Dave Sell takes notes from the dictionary 16 m Wm ,.. A LONGER DAT It is already long after school; yet some students remain. . - , L h gs k Whether because of self-imposed ex- tended study or activities, which make up the wellq'ounded program at Ander- sonJ many are involved in work after the I final bell. 1 These impressions typify the moods, the work, the inspiration, enthusiasm and intensity which are part of the story at Anderson. The Forest Hills chapter was established in 1957. The Constitution, as written for our school, pro- vides that the top 1570 of seniors who meet the scholastic requirement of a B average, may be eligi- ble for consideration, with 10th; being elected the junior year and an additional 572; being elected the senior year. - With scholarship the basis for eligibility, a list of candidates is submitted to the entire faculty for rating on three additional characteristics, character, leadership, and service. On the basis of these ratings candidates are selected for membership by the faculty council. Membership in the National Honor Society is indeed an honor. Carolyn Taylor PVT.O. In your lifetime it has been your privilege to witness signiiicant advances in scientific endeavor. Great strides have been made in the areas of atomic energy and space. The peoples of the world are constantly being brought closer together geographically. Yet, in the areas of mutual understanding and respect they appear to be growing further apart. Disciplined living is the whole base on which society is founded. Humans cannot exist together if people lie, if they cheat, if they steal, if they hurt, if they think only of themselves. This has always been true. It was true in the Stone Age, Roman Days, in the Renaissance, during our pioneer period, and, today, it is more true than ever. ii, 111 11111111. mmuu l r XIII!!! IlllI Will. -We live closer to each other than people ever have before. We have nowhere to hide, nowhere to escape, no place where we can stay by ourselves. We have to work with people. We have to live with people. We are a thousand times more a society today, and hope- fully we are going to continue to improve, but our age simply must have discipline. People who are well-disciplined are usually happy and successful people. Avoid excesses in life. Live in the fear and admonition of the Lord and you will join others in making this world a better place in which to live. The future of the world, and consequently the future of society depends upon the manifestation of love, honor and respect for your fellowmen. There still is no better rule than the golden rule, lKDo unto others as you would have them do unto you? Good luck and best wishes in the years to come.
