'iff -EGL a YQ! fill I If fs Ship's History USS ANCHORAGE ILSD 361 The first ship to be named after Alaskafs largest city, USS ANCHORAGE was laid down on March 13, 1967 by Ingalls Shipbuilding Corporation. She was launched at Pascagoula, Mississippi on May 5, 1968, sponsored by Mrs. Alexander S. Heyward, wife of Vice Admiral Heyward. She was then commissioned on March 15, 1969 at Norfolk Naval Shipyard, com- manded by Captain Percy S. Beaman. Following a brief trip to Andros Island, Bahamas, AN- CHORAGE departed on 24 June for San Diego, where she arrived on July 26, 1969. On January 31, 1970, ANCHORAGE set sail for her first Western Pacific deployment as part of Operation Keystone Bluejay, the planned withdrawl of the first Marine Division from Vietnam. She returned home on March 12, 1970. After a brief one and a half month stay in homeport, ANCHORAGE again deployed to the Far East on May 1, 197 0. There, she operated with Amphibious Squadron FIVE units continuously off the coast of Vietnam. She returned to San Diego on Dec 10, 197 0. The time in homeport only lasted two months and she departed for the third time on February 20, 1 97 1. She was tasked with transporting construction materials to build a communication station on Diego Garcia, from which she returned on May 1 1, 1971. ANCHORAGE sailed yet again on October 1, 1 97 1 enroute Vietnam to continue the withdrawal of the Marines from Vung Tau to the Republic of the Phillipines. She returned home July 24, 1 972. In February of 197 3, ANCHORAGE began her first overhaul, which lasted until Septem- ber 23, 1973. Shortly thereafter, she headed out for her fifth WESTPAC on December 8, 1973 and returned April 18, 1974. After a period of upkeep in San Diego and Long Beach, ANCHOR- AGE again sailed for the orient on March 28, 1975, where she was called to participate in the operation to free the USS MAYAGUEZ and aid in the evacuation of Vietnam in April 1975, Operation Frequent Wind. She returned to homeport on November 16, 1975. During service which has spanned three decades, ANCHORAGE has patrolled in three of the worldfs oceans and countless trouble spots. Her deployments have included many highly important operations, most recently, the Gulf War in 1990-1991. During Operation Desert Storm.. ANCHORAGE controlled the largest LCAC offload of amphibious ships in history and participated in the only amphibious offload in support of combat operations. He was commissioned through the Naval ROTC pro- gram at the University of Michi- gan, where he graduated in 1980 with a B.A. in Education. He also played offensive center on the University of Michigan Football team. His initial sea assignment was in USS CAYUGA CLST 11865 where he served as CIC Officer and Auxiliaries, Electrical and Repair Officer. Transferring to USS WORDEN CCG-185 in 1985, he served as CIC Officer and Auxiliaries Officer. Follow- ing completion ofthe SWOS De- i partment Head course, he was assigned as Engineering Officer on USS REID CFFG-305. 1 Transferring in April 1989, his next assignment was as Staff Material Officer for Com- i mander, Destroyer Squadron TWENTY ONE. He was ordered in March 1991 t0 CINCLANTFLT Propulsion Examining Board as a Gas Turbine Examiner. From Novem- ber 1993 to March 1995 he served as Executive Officer on USS OLDENDORF CDD 9721. His moSt recent assignment was to the I3 directorate in the Mobility Control Center, United States Transporta- tion Command, at Scott Air Force Base, Illinois. Commander Angood received a Masters Degrcfb in Intemational Relations from Webster University of St. Louis, Missouri. He also graduated from the United States Air Force Air War College. Personal awards include the Defense Meritorious Service Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars, and the Joint Service Achievement Medal.
