I have found here a big school, and everyday I find new friends. All that 1 have experienced was fun, and it will always be in my memory. I think that all of you have helped me to study, especially the faculty. Most of my happiness was from my friends, and they are you. You are lucky to have a school like Analy and a city like Sebastopol. I feel lucky, too, because I met smart boys, pretty girls, and found the most beautiful thing of all was your friendship. I want you to know that if you come to my country, you will find my arms open as I found yours; thus, giving me the opportunity of knowing Analy and most importantly its people. Now I can say that I know Sebastopol, because to know a place isn’t just sightseeing, but communicating with the people. I will never forget you. Success for you are my best wishes. Su Amigo, Hugo Quintanilla “Kon-nichi-wa” is Japanese for “hello. Well, I just want to say thank you for taking care of me during my stay here. I am really glad I could come to Analy High School. I do not want to go back to Japan. I want to stay here longer. I am interested in the people, the countryside, the strange and strong power of the country, and much more. And actually, school study would be easier than in Japan if I understood English well. My English is still poor but much better than before I came here. Many Japanese high school students want to come over to the U.S. and learn English, American Democracy, and about the people. I hope they will be able to come. The U.S. has many interesting things for us. By the way, do you want to come to Japan? If you have an interest in it, and come to Japan we’ll welcome you! I have to return to J apan. I am afraid 1 want to come again, but I probably cannot. I’ll never forget my friends. Finally, I want to say again “Thank 9 you. Yoshito Hirashima My name is Janete Duke. I’m from El Salvador. I have been here for about 3 months. I have been living with the Meiburg family. They are really very nice with me. I have gratitude for this family and much affection. I can never believe how happy I have been here. All the people were kind to me from the first moment that I came here, really friendly, and all the time trying to help me in my English. I came here because I wanted to Learn English. I felt part of this school, and I think that I never could forget you because you form part of one of the most happy summers of my life. 1 hanks very much for giving me such a valuable opportunity. Your school helps the people from other countries that want to know something about your customs to learn your languages, etc. I say good-bye with much sadness, and you know that I carry you in my heart and always will remember you. You can be sure that I will shed many tears in leaving. With all my love, Sincerely, Janete Duke The Sebastopol Bicentennial Committee invited Analy High School students to participate in the community’s Bicentennial essay contest. Four-hundred word essays were prepared by a number of Analy students on the topic of America at the Bicentennial”. Included in the topic were the revolutionary war era, subsequent historical periods, the free enterprise system, current challenges and opportunities, and prospects for our nation's future. Judging was done by the Sebastopol Chamber of Commerce. Winners at Analy High School who received special recognition and cash awards were Ann Chapnick, Michele Binkley, and Karen Vaughan. “AMERICA AT THE BICENTENNIAL” The English poet Swinburne wrote of his nation’s glories: “All our past acclaims our future....... It is in much this same spirit that the United States enters into its bicentennial celebration, proud of its past, hopeful of its future. The Bicentennial is a celebration of the first time a great power has lived so long under a stable government without sacrificing the liberties of the people. Mankind has witnessed a unique experiment in democracy, one the world has never seen before. But only by changing our nation’s priorities, putting people before profits and productivity and preserving our rights, will we be able to survive the next one-hundred years. What-price progress? Social progress implies that human naturi- is improving and that mankind is becoming better, but, as material gains are made, other problems arise. I he average life of the world's great civilizations has been two- hundred years. During this period, each has progressed through the following sequence: from bondage to spiritual faith, spiritual faith to great courage, courage to liberty, liberty to abundance, abundance to selfishness, selfishness to complacency, complacency to apathy, apathv to dependency and then, dependency back to bondage. Since America is now celebrating her two-hundredth anniversary, we may be approaching the last phase. Isn’t it true that the people of our country are now evidencing an apathetic attitude toward our nation's problems? As a nation, we can still be proud of our accomplishments, but now is a time to reflect not only on where we have been, but on where we’re going. From a tiny spark, the Founding Fathers created history's greatest chain reaction: one nation under God, with liberty and justice for all.” Americans still have a great amount of freedom, but since 1914, the freedom of Americans has diminished rather than increased, and the rights of the individual, in some respects, are not as secure as they once were. The right of equality is a good example. For years, schools have preached equality in the classroom and leaders have talked of equality in their speeches; but, do we have equality? Not quite! Although the Civil Rights Amendment has done much to improve the conditions for minority groups, in many places, blacks and other minc-'ties are still treated as second class citizens. This is also true of the poor. Harry Truman once said. Men make history and not the other way ’round.” He spoke not just of leaders, but of a dynamic people proud of their history, acclaiming their future. Let’s transpose our society from its present state of degeneracy and decay to one of common decency and basic truths, devoted to justice and equality for all. May God bless us in the undertaking. They did well because they kept moving and played as a team - a deep unity that could be felt throughout. Any sport is like a dance. The music plays inside your head while you respond to the ball and your teammates. Mrs. Mason, Coach Volleyball is a thing of beauty because it allows me to be myself in a relaxed, unpressured atmosphere. It allows each one of us to be a part of the other, and we can make it work in any way we want by mere expressions of ourselves. Marianna Cannefax In volleyball a bond is developed toward the other trammates. and the feeling of closeness is beautiful. If the game is played right, it can be a masterpiece in its own way. Each had a specialty. Their function is to oversee the work of the staff and to assume the responsibility of meeting the deadlines. We relied greatly on Terri for her art work and related experiences. She began the year by making a final sketch for the endsheets. Kim Grone’s valuable talents contributed heavily in all phases of yearbook production. If anyone deserves special credit for this Azalea, it is Kim, who spent many productive hours after school completing unfinished parts of a deadline. BUSINESS MANAGER Leslie Furusho has been very efficient. One of her first assignments was to estimate our income and expenses in order to determine the price of the Azalea. Leslie organized the yearbook sales, kept books on money collected, handled our billing, and balanced our account. COPY EDITOR Linda Buras came into the yearbook class saying she wanted to have typing practice. Did she type! When the typing was done, she worked at proofreading. PHOTO EDITOR Elaine Dollwet had prepared for this position last summer by taking a photography seminar in South San Francisco. Her function was to set up picture schedules, assist the photographer and order prints. Yearbook production involves selling advertisements, planning the finance, selling books, selecting a theme, designing the cover and endsheets, making a detailed plan of the book, setting page deadlines, getting photographs, preparing copy, and designing layouts. There was a lot of hard work put into the book by everyone on the staff, more work than I ever imagined. I liked being Copy Editor because I enjoy typing. Proofreading wasn't so exciting, but I feel it was all worthwhile. Linda Buras This yearbook was my first. The people made the class, and I’ll never forget some of the things we did. When deadline came up, we had to work overtime. Elaine Dollwet This yearbook will hopefully be the most original. I mainly took care of the financial planning and helped do the Yesteryear pages. I enjoyed working on pages because I'm excited about seeing the end result. Leslie F urusho Working on the yearbook has been a new experience. It was a lot of fun and work. I enjoyed making layouts, helping with different parts of the book, and doing the rally pages. Lori Giusti This was my first year. Working with the staff is one of my most memorable experiences. I enjoyed learning all that was involved in putting the book together. Helping the photographer take club pictures was fun, also. The least enjoyable was the pressure of the deadlines. Kim Gu Hedge My main contribution was the planning and layout of the sport pages. The most difficult was the Fall Sports Scoreboard. Kelvin Meuchel Working on this yearbook was a good experience, and I’ll always remember it. I especially liked working on the Yesteryear pages and helping Kelvin with the sports. Linda Mukaida I have enjoyed being on the yearbook staff this year. I helped organize some of the girls’ sports pages. The yearbook staff has a lot of responsibility getting the pages in on the deadline. I think this year’s book will be one of the best. I hope you agree. Venise Nahmens This was my second year on the staff. My largest specific contribution was designing the color pages. I also helped on the Yesteryear pages. It was a good experience being in this yearbook class. Suzy Smith This was my first year on the staff. I really enjoyed putting together such pages as the Spring Play pages, the AFS page and writing the poem for Mr. Mattson. Putting a yearbook together isn't as easy as I planned it would be. With this year being our country’s 200th birthday, the class chose a Bicentennial theme that emphasized “America the Beautiful”. This year we have some unique features in our yearbook. For the first time we have a full sixteen pages of color and spot color, a senior log, and identification of the majority of candids New ideas were tried to add interest to our yearbook. Also much effort went into the Azalea, including many extra hours by some after school. The Yearbook class would be a good adventure for hard workers who have a strong sense of responsibility. Now that our production is complete, sit back and enjoy yourself.
