TIMO. fcH V 10rui- Article discussing plans for a union high school in Sebastopol EARL Y HISTOR Y OF ANAL Y HIGH TAKEN FROM THE 1910 YEARBOOK Prior to the establishment of Analy High School, boys and girls from the Sebastopol area who wished to attend high school had to travel to Santa Rosa. This was inconvenient, expensive, and time consuming and thinking citizens recognized the need for a Sebastopol high school. As a result, in the fall of 1908, a vote was taken, resulting in the establishment of Analy Union High School. Trustees were elected from the districts comprising the union, a site was chosen, building plans were decided upon, and the work of construction began. Finding it inexpedient to await the completion of the building, temporary quarters were found in the grammar school building. Accommodations and equipment were not of the best, and the students labored under many difficulties. The school consisted of three rooms, three teachers, and thirty-five students. School opened for the fall term of the second year, late in September, 1909, still in the temporary quarters. Late in the year the longed for summons came. The students took their books and marched, in the order of their classes, to the new building. Here they found things in a chaotic state, but soon order was brought out of the confusion. The second year the number of the students was doubled, and a new teacher was added. Chemistry and Physics were added to the course of study. The second year saw Analy boast a tennis court, a track, and a space for basketball. Athletics received their full measure of attention. The school was visited by Professor Thomas, of the University of California. He observed the school and announced that, considering the extreme youth of the school, he was pleased. He assured the school that any student wishing to attend college would be received from Analy. Analy Union High School is flourishing, her enrollment is steadily increasing and it is safe to predict as rapid development in the future. Every thing is in our favor and our school yet may be ranked among the best in the Golden State. Success to you, Analy! 2 THE WA YIT WAS... THE WA Y IT IS DEDICATION OF THE NEW STADIUM ON KARLSON FIELD Dedication of the new stadium on Karls on Field took place at half time during a Varsity Football game. The dedication program, written by Dr. John McGrew, District Superintendent, was narrated by Mr. Ron Shecklen, Analy Drama teacher. The new stadium was built through the efforts of the Sebastopol Rotary Club. Members devoted time and money to the project. Accompanying music provided by the Analy Band and A Cappella Choir, directed by Mr. John Weeks and Mr. Louis Lewis, gave the program a fes- tive effect. Officially presenting the stadium to the district were Mr. Norm Stupfel and Mr. Mel Parker, representing the Sebastopol Rotary Club. Much of the stadium drive leadership was provided by Rotarian Bud Park, grandfather of Analy junior Chris Nott, who was on hand for the dedication though he was critically ill. In effect, the stadium represents an ongoing memorial to Mr. Park, who died January 1, 1975. 4 7 8 'CUfli’ii lurrtium The Entire Senior Class of 1911 «Ibtlia Papnr ‘■2?lanrl)f .fUoran John Alves Donna Anderson Tim Anderson Randy Andrus Scott Asbiil Tracy Aston Gail Azevedo Joseph Babcock Donald Baldi Cheryl Balzer Teri Banthrall Adrian Barker 12 SENIORS Lisa Barnard Cindy Barnier Teresa Barragan Jeanne Bassett Pamela Batty Meg Bau mgr as Michael Bax man John Beradt Margaret Best Sandra Birkes Linnett Bishop Herbert Bladel Belle Borsi Kathy Boyd SENIORS 13 Lewis Bradbury Carla Brantley Brad Brazill Bonnie Brisbin Carolyn Brown Mary Bryant Paula Buchanan Gary Burcell Brian Burgo Melanie Burke Susan Burton Randy Buskirk George Bustilloz David Byrne SENIORS 14 Beverly Calverley David Calvi Richard Calvi Loree Camden Maria Caro Diane Carrion William Caulfield Nihal Cetinerler Debra Charnock Eric Christensen Barbara Conkright Timothy Corcoran Debra Cupples Teresa Curtis Tim Dahl 16 Donna Engen Candida Erlandson Joe Fernandes Sherri Fish Patrick Flournoy Kevin Fogel Linda Fomasi Loretta Foresman Linda Fox Lorelei Frank 18 SENIORS Janice Frazer Lydia Garcia Ronald Garner Richard Geernaert Paula Gerboth Pat Gibbens Gregory Gill Renee Gillette Paul Giusti Vincent Gonzales Elizabeth Gleissle Nanci Gore Kraig Goodlund Debbie Goudswaard SENIORS 19 Daniel Healy John Hodapp Gary Hoffman Deborah Homan Randall Hanna Cynthia Hansen Barbara Harding Dan Haugh Gwynne Hawkins Glenn Graves Scott Greeson Claudia Guccione Gregory Guerinoni Edward Gumm Leslie Ireland Patricia James Timothy Jason David Jeffers Nancy Jensen Kathy Johnson Thelma Johnson Glenda Jones Suzan Jorgensen Gloria Josephson Janet Kaehler Frederick Keenan 21 SENIORS George Kennedy Wardeen Kinder Kristopher King Michael Klein Britta Kwartz 22 Leslie Maggio Maria Loza Jackie Lyons Kathleen Lytle Germana Macii Joseph Marcia Conrad March Renee Marson Robbie Matheny Rodney Matter! I think that your school system is very good and your administration one of the best. Analy is a little bit crowded, but that just makes the students feel closer together. All the friends I gained so fast helped me through the first months. All your clubs, the band, and your sports programs—all those things you have so much more of— are just great. Again, thank you all for taking care of me during my stay. Bjorn Ouchterlony I came to America as an exchange student because I thought it was boring at home, and I wanted some change. And it was a change, even though one of the first things I found out was that a lot of kids here are bored in exactly the way I was. There are many differences between Swedish and American schools, but the people are the same. There are all kinds of them, and I like getting to know new people. Unfortunately, I have only enough time to become real friends with a few, but those are friendships that I do appreciate. What I like about Analy is that I can take classes that I never would have an opportunity to take at home. It's classes like Drama, Humanities, and Anthropology that I am thing of. 1 believe that a class like Drama, for example, can do a lot of good for a shy little Swede like me. I want to thank all of you who helped me to make this year one of the best years in my life. Hello Everybody! I spent one of the most enjoyable and beautiful years of my 18 years in Sebastopol, mostly at Analy. That's really true. It was a great experience for me. Before I came here, I was kinda scared. I didn't know' what I was supposed to do in a big strange country with strange people, different customs, and a different language. But later the people in Sebastopol and the great friends and teachers at Analy helped me and made my AFS year wonderful. The school is really different from my school in Istanbul. It is much easier. And the school system is extremely different. I think it is a great chance to be able to choose the classes, so you can take whatever you w ant. That is why the American students are really lucky. I want to thank you in this yearbook. This year at Analy is my best year. I can always think back and remember everything I had. Found but rarely in this world Of freedom-loving, self-enslaved men. They have built cages. Of stone and steel, pride and ignorance, fear and misplaced fervor. Sealing themselves away from liberty, And then straining through the bars of the prison, again to grasp the strains of freedom floating high and wild on the wind. So difficult to attain and to hold. What is freedom That men should make it a model for living. Seeking liberty in the midst of bondage. And indepen dence of thought and action under forced conformity? Man seeks freedom because he knows it is his by nature, Perceived as intimately as the thoughts he thinks. An innate component of the human mentality. Which when lost leaves an unhealed wound and an incomplete soul. Let men not build prisons, but nations. And let them follow their highest ideals of freedom. Today a nation lives, ’’Conceived in liberty”. I cherish America, Because it is free. Born two hundred years ago of a struggle of men. Toward the ideal of a nation founded in truth, Not for conquest, or for spoils, or for glorious war, But simply for freedom— This is America’s heritage. An experiment in liberty and the preservation of liberty. A nation built on the strength of its people and the wisdom of its laws, Land of unlimited opportunity, expansion, and growth. For the individual to think as he will and worship as he will. Be what he must be, And sacrifice his freedom if he feels he must. For the worker. Millions of factories processing, assembling, building, exporting; the newest invention. Careers in kaleidoscope. The multitudes labor and each person strives for himslef. And the country grows stronger The finest education is here for the rich man or the poor man. Each may read, speak, and believe as conscience dictates or purpose demands. America holds a place for every cause. Every opinion, every dedication, every voice, From the most evil to the most beneficent; The scales balance. And freedom judges every man. Be joyful that you are free, Because America is free. Celebrate. And grow, But be vigilant. Here men take their lives and shape them as they will and go their ways. Lulled by generations of independence. Sometimes into a sleepy forgetfulness Of the source of freedom. Generations past have preserved the source. And people of today must continue, with watchfulness. Their first responsibility always to keep America’s heritage, A heritage more profoundly free than any ever known, The source of each citizen’s independence. The life of a society dedicated to liberty. America cannot sleep. Cannot languish in complacency, succumb to blindness; Or cages and prisons will encompass the land. And freedom vanish. Billions of stars move tow'ard billions of destinies. As does this planet, inexorably. But man upon earth shall control his own destiny. The heart of America, dwelling on freedom. Must face the future with responsibility, That these United States may not crumble into history. But become a destined light of freedom. Illuming the darkness of unknown tomorrows. By: Grace Mahannah AMERICA ’S HERITAGE, America’s heritage is my responsibility, even though, being a Mexican American, it actually isn’t my country. I strongly believe that if any individual lives in America, regardless of what his nationality is, he is in fact part of the heritage of both present and future. Heritage is what any nation is based upon, whether communist or free; the remnants of the past are what is today’s heritage. From our forefathers, whose yell of Give me liberty or give me death , was heard round the world, we, the American people, received a land in which children can grow wise from making their own decisions and learning not to comply with the teachings of would-be world conquerors or communist dictators. We, also, inherited lands, vast in wealth, not just from products extracted from its earthly storehouses, but wealti in its beauty and size. Our land, for I consider it as much mine as any bom on its soil, didn’t come cheaply. Men and boys, not much older than I, gave their lives in countless wars so future generations would be free to govern their own affairs. America has emerged from a VAST wilderness to become one of the leading nations of the world. We are looked upon as the big brother of the world . MY RESPONSIBILITY always willing to lend a helping hand to countries in need. Our willingness to help didn’t stop, even when death was inevitable, for in practically every war ever fought we were doing most of the helping. The Vietnamese war and most assuredly Watergate, cost us our big brother image, but if in our failure to try to prevent communist takeovers of small defenseless countries we are forced up against a wall, far better for rebellion against us now than in future years. We have withstood greater trials in the past and will withstand more in future years. For the time being we will sit back and attend to matters within our own nation, awaiting the chance when we are again needed by our fellow man. I strongly believe that my generation and generations yet to come will be the deciding factors in which way the future will take us. For now, I am proud to live in this land. It has its problems, but then so do all the others, and as I continue to make this my home, I hope that the heritage left behind by my generation is as worthy as that of the past. We’re playing bridge.” Mr. Crump: “Oh, I beg your pardon.” Jim: ‘Til take pork chops and make them lean.” Waiter: “Yes sir, to the right or left?” Elaine: “Those are my grandmother’s ashes over there.” June: “Oh, so the poor old soul has passed on?” Elaine: “No, she’s just too lazy to look for an ash tray.” George: “I haven’t slept for days.” Cliff: “What’s the matter?” George: “1 sleep at night.” I like an exam, I think they’re fun, 1 never cram, 1 never flunk one. As he scanned his garden over He chanced as it were to espy A beautiful flower just opened With an opening bud nearby. He was pleased to find them together; And he took for himself that day. THE TWO: and their fragrance and beauty Were added to JESUS1 bouquet. Now plucking them did not destroy them. For now at their masters side Their fragrance rare and beauty fair THEY’LL be scattering far and wide. (Poem written for Matt and Lee after their death by Matt’s Sunday school teacher.) I truly hope that everyone enjoys this year’s Azalea. All of us on the staff worked very hard under the supervision of Mrs. Banovich, who worked along with us, to put together a yearbook that would be appreciated by everyone. Since the official United States bi- centennial celebration begins shortly after this book is published, we thought that this is the ideal year to include local history as part of our Azalea. We con- structed our theme around our country’s approaching 200th birthday. Without the help of many generous people, we would not have been able to complete our theme. Mr. Edward Trigiero, a local historian, made our ideas come to life. He took time to show us his collection of pictures, some of which are on the covers and endsheets. He also loaned two antique cars as props in the organization section. Other people contributed time and equipment: Mr. Harold Pellini and his daughter Nancy supplied the other antique cars; Mr. A1 Helwig, the antique truck; Mr. John Jenkel, all the horse vehicles; the railroad, the caboose and engine. Finding a good theme is difficult on its own, but putting together the yearbook offers a challenge. Some of the tasks involved are planning the sections, figuring out how many pages in each section, and deciding what goes on each page. Then come the hard part. Meeting deadlines ! Possibly we have set a record at Analy for making our deadlines on time. In summary, we are hoping that you will think this to be the best Azalea yet. If you have some ideas to make the next annual even better, pass them on to the next editor. Any volunteers? k Accommodation Line! From Petalum to Bodega!
