Pre-game warm-up. ANACORTES 0. KENT-MERIDIAN 0 In the ’Hawks' first game they came head on with the ’54 mythical state champs. The team was high for this one and gained a moral victory in the 0-0 deadlock. Although they were statistically inferior the home eleven showed much promise and even more spirit. The Seahawk tie was the only blemish on the Royals’ record as they played out their season undefeated and were again high in the state prep football poll. Granville to Plummer for a first down. ANACORTES 6. MT. BAKER 14 Avenging last year’s 26-9 defeat by the ’Hawks, the Moun- taineers set back a stubborn Anacortes eleven 14 6 in a non- conference clash. In the third period with the score 7-0, Mt. Baker. Rod Studley scored the first points for the Seahawks. a 65 yard canter. The Bakerites clinched their victory with an unsuspected 30 yard pass play with twenty seconds remaining. ANACORTES 0, MT. VERNON 7 The Seahawks tried hard to spoil the Bulldog homecom- ing but ended on the short end of a 7-0 score. In the first con- ference tilt the Hawks didn’t come alive ’till the second half. Then the Seahawks were continually in Mt. Vernon’s hair but failed to reach paydirt. ANACORTES 36. MARYSVILLE 0 The Seahawk offense exploded in this one as they tallied six times while their own goal was never seriously threat- ened. Bob Barcott tied an A.H.S. individual scoring record, scoring 24 points. The Tomahawks were outplayed and Coach Peterson substituted freely in the purples first victory. ANACORTES 0. ARLINGTON 20 John Larson and Co. broke the Hawks’ back as he rambled three times into touchdown land. The Seahawks were out- scored but not outhustled. Except for those three defensive lapses the Peterson's played the Eagles to a standoff. The Hawks rush in. 104 After the game. Early season acrobatics. The Birds played hard but couldn’t stop Burlington1 offensive thrusts. ANACORTES 0. EDMONDS 25 Anacortes lost their third consecutive game to the always powerful Edmonds eleven. The Tigers’ first half surge netted them 19 points but the Hawks displayed a brilliant second half defense. This went for naught, however, as the Seahawks offense wasn’t there. ANACORTES 14. SEDRO WOOLLEY 0 In this game Anacortes blanked the opposiiton as the Cubs were turned under, 14-0. With both the offense and de- fense clicking, the purples ended their scoring famine in a hard-fought, cross-country clash. ANACORTES 12. SNOHOMISH 12 The finals for the home town eleven was played at Sno- homish wit hthe snow and cold serving as a great equalizer. The Panthers had jumped to a two touchdown lead, but late In the fourth period, Studley received a pass from Granville and swivel-hipped 20 yards for the T.D. Another pass, Gran- ville to Plummer evened the score. The tie gained for the Sea- hawks a sixth place finish in the Northwest League. The annual football banquet was a mid-December event with awards being presented. Larry Sawyer, senior halfback, a victim of an early season fracture, was awarded the Kiwanis Inspirational trophy. Bob Barcott and Rod Studley shared the Best Blocking and Tackling award. Three Seahawks were Honorable mentions in the NWL. Burlington and Blaine once, and the re- maining members of the Northwest League twice, represented the Northwest District as team number one at the State tour- ney March 14-17. This was the Taylors third trip to the Big City in as many years. The Anacortes second team won 16 of 20 with Keister. Fox and Guthrie leading the way. Clothing The desire and hope of all here at Anacorles was realized on Friday, March 9, 1956 at 10:15. For on that date, the Anacortes Seahawks had annexed their second straight Northwest District Basketball crown which sent them on their way to the annual State Basketball Tour- nament. This seemed to become a matter of fact occur- rance as the team along with many loyal fans were mak- ing their twelfth appearance in Hec Edmundson Pavilion. Anacortes drew Garfield as its first foe, and avenging the ’55 tourney defeat, trounced the Bulldogs with a late game spurt. 56-38. The following day the relaxed Hawks led all the way and with a phenomenal shooting perform- ance wore down the Lewis and Clark fivesome 68-52. On the third day after two straight wins, the Sea- hawks were in the semi-finals with the Highland Scot- ties. and in a battle of little giants the Hawks again won. this time 63-60. On the final night and the night which determined the State’s number one high school basketball team, the Seahawks came out second best, but not without making a very good showing and tossing a real scare into the Lincoln Lynx. The Hawks started slow and were down five points at intermission but staged a fourth quarter drive that brought them within four, 58-54. But a Lin- coln stall drew fouls from the pressing Seahawk five and the Hawks went down to defeat, 68-5S. Even in defeat, the fine delegation of high school athletes represented their school and community magni- ficently. The second place finish, recorded by this year’s fine squad, is the best on record for Anacortes. The hon- ors won individually by the team members were: Don Daniels. All-State, All NW District, and All NW League: Orville Breckenridge. 3rd team All-State, 2nd team All NW District, and an All NW League selection: Bob Bar- cott and Jack Higgins. Honorable Mention in both state, and district: Duane Cully an All NW League choice, and Gary Plummer, Honorable Mention at State and 2nd team All NW District, and also an All NW League choice. A fact which was very instrumental in the fine per- formance of the team was the strong bench displayed by Seahawks Jack Clark. Albert LeMay. Gary Keister, Dave Balthazor, Brian Courtney and Rod Studley. They pointed out the fine team effort which accomplished so much. This group of fellows, many of whom could have played regularly on any other team in the league, had to be satisfied with bit-parts. Approximately 3000 townspeople met the victorious Seahawks at Sullivan’s Corner the following Sunday to show their appreciation for a job well done. Thoroughly unexpected, but long to be remembered by the team members, was the impromptu welcome which turned into a civic affair. A procession of horn-honking well-wishers made their way down Commercial Avenue with the bas- ketball team and coach in seats of honor. The motorcade stopped at the post office where a crowd of 1000 heard the individual remarks and thanks from team members and coaches. Surely on that day the AHS basketball squad men were the number one citizens. The Elks held their annual Basketball Banquet. April 10. a successful affair. Movies of the championship game with Lincoln and the memorable Homecoming” were shown. Hec Edmundson, the former U. of W. bas- ketball coach was the guest speaker. As a result of local contributions each squad member was awarded a trophy for his part in the team’s more than successful season. Duane Cully was awarded the Anacortes American Inspirational Award and the team presented Coach Tay- lor with a plaque awarded in presentation. And so to a team which displayed amazing team- work: and a never die attitude, wonderful sportsman- ship and a desire to win which served as fine representa- tives of their school, community, and district and which accomplished much in many respects, this supplement is dedicated.
