PREDEPLOYMENT i Upon announcement that AMPHION would be leased to the Iranian government, ship's' company began a massive Spring Cleaning op- eration that ranged from removing to refurbishing shops and machines which had made AMPHION' number one in service to the fleet for twenty-five years. It was agreed that AMPHION should undergo a short yard period for hull work, but which shipyard remained a mystery. Finally, on the afternoon of Monday, 2 August 1971, AMPHION was ordered to sea - destination unknown. She was steaming in the vicinity of Ambrose Light when theofficialmessage arrived. NEW YORK?
