Every year at AHS the student body elects a senior boy and a senior girl for Mr. and Miss AHS. The candidates are nominated by their fellow students and should portray leadership, friendship, loyalty, and service. Other qualifications are that they must have had a 2.5 grade average and must have been active in 10 organizations since they have been at AHS. The candidates need 3 teachers to sign their nomination forms. Hiron Cowan and Dina Faulkner were elected Mr. and Miss AHS with Gregg Wax and Vernadean Dobbs runners up. While at AHS Gregg has been a member of the Student Council four years. He was Senior class president, Student body vice-president, Sophomore class president, and Freshman class president. He has been a member of the French club three years serving as reporter his Freshman year, member of DEC A two years, member Science club one year serving as vice president his senior year, and member of Spanish club one year. He played football his freshman year and was a three year let-terman in baseball and basketball. Gregg plans to attend Mississippi State and major in Electronic Engineering. Vernadean Dobbs has played basketball all four years in high school and was all conference three years. She participated in the beauty revue two years and was elected Homecoming Queen her senior year. She has been a member of the Library Club four years, member of HERO Club two years serving as president and secretary, member of FHA one year serving as secretary and district secretary, member of Student Council two years, member of DECA one year serving as secretary, member of FBLA serving as representative her senior year, and member of Y-Teens serving as president and vice president. She has placed in district and state competition in lockstitch in HERO. Miss Amory High School, Dina Faulkner, has been a member of National Honor Society, Spanish Honor Society serving as president, FBLA, Hl-Y, Science Club, peptomist, and Student Council serving as sophomore vice president. She was also a member of Amory Panther Band and Varsity Football Cheerleader three years. She has participated in the beauty revue three years and been a member of the Homecoming Court her freshman and senior year. Mr. Amory High School, Hiron Cowan, has been a member of FBLA three years and is presently serving as president, president of Thespians and has participated in four plays, vice-president and drum major of the band, member of French Club and French National Honor Society, member of AHS Jazz Band, member of Hi-Y, Youth Congress delegate, Rotary Boy, Boy’s State Delegate, and a platform events participant. 19

THE GOLDEN PANTHER AWARD The highest award given at Amory High School is for meritorious achievement, The Golden Panther Award. The Golden Panther Award is not given” it is earned through a four year long process. Determination is based on a 400 point system — with 2— points accorded to academic excellence and 200 points accorded to activities. Each Golden Panther recipient received a plaque and card and in addition will have his name inscribed on the permanent plaque in the trophy case.
