INDUCTION: Santa Comes To AHS The National Honor Society members — Darcy Brown, Ken Reich, Missy Merideth, Alicia Mitchell, Priscilla Pruitt, Suzanne Ross, Karen Salter, Stephanie Weaver — conducted the induction service in assembly during December. Santa Claus, Darcy Brown, was a big hit as were the elves. After the induction ceremony, the parents of the old members gave a tea for the inductees and ththeir parents (see page 12 for pictures of the new members.) The most successful project of the NHS is the selection of the most improved students each six weeks and also the most improved homeroom. The sponsor is Mrs. Eugenia Hood. 11

DAR American History The Lee McCown memorial scholarship, presented annually by the Century Club, went this year to Charles Sisson. Awarded by Glenda Reese, the scholarship is given to a senior who has shown potential in the technical field. Alicia Mitchell was named winner of the $100 scholarship from Beta Sigma Phi. Sue Grissom, a member of the organization, presented the award. Recognized as the Pilot Club Girl of the Year by President Beverly Outlaw was Rebecca Lockhart. The senior received a $100 scholarship. The second annual Wayne Outlaw memorial scholarship was awarded this year by Dickie Miller to Tommy Thompson. The award is given by the Outlaw Family. Sammy Nerren was recognized as the outstanding social studies student and presented a $100 scholarship in memory of X. L. Gray Conwill, who died while teaching at Amory High School. The DAR American History award was presented this year to Van East III by the Cotton Gin Port Chapter. Recognized as the DAR Good Citizen was Suzanne Ross. This award is based on dependability, leadership, service, and patriotism. Suzanne also was recognized as the school’s Star Student based on her high ACT score. She in turn named math teacher, Mrs. Ruth Griffith as the Star Teacher. Eugenia Hood awarded the math medal to Karen Salter for her accomplishment on a recent math test given to seniors. Business awards were presented by Kay Moffett to: Lisa Lantrip, Kathleen Oglesby, Carolyn Alsup, Melissa Brown, Sharon Nash, Matissa Sizemore, Kathy Cox, Kenny Moffett, Frankie Allison, and Jeannie Burrow. French teacher, Louis Rowles, named the outstanding French students for the year. Matissa Sizemore received the second year student award, while Lee Ann Parham and Kat Holman were recipients of the first year award. Priscilla Pruitt was especially recognized for her service as an officer in the local and state French Clubs. Mario Ortiz, high school Spanish teacher, presented awards to Peyton Ross and Sharon Huskey, outstanding first year students; and Lori Thornton, who excelled as a second year student. Ginger Lindsey received a special award for her service as a member of the Spanish Club. Suzanne Ross was named the outstanding member of the Future Business Leaders of America and presented a plaque by Frankie Allison. Suzanne was president of the chapter this year. The Amory chapter of Distributive Education Clubs of America selected chapter president, Kim Huffman, as the outstanding member. Kim receive a plaque from chapter sponsor, Susan Wise. The Peptomist award for service was presented by sponsors, Louis Rowles, Nancy Shumpert, and Joanne Forbus, to Darcy Brown. There were two recipients this year of the Dekalb Agriculture award which is given annually by ag teacher, Herman Riley, to the outstanding agriculture student. The award this year went to twins, Ronnie and Donnie Bowen.
