and string ensembles were heard during the year at assemblies, and competed in the NYSSMA. Students who participated in the Long lsland Sectional Orchestra were Karen Karlsson and Ann Yardley. 'llhis year our drum major was senior Albert Kane, who did an excellent job leading the marching band and twirlers in formations at football games and pa- rades. The twirling squad looked spectac- ular in their new red and gray satin uni- forms trimmed with gold braid. Last year's senior class appropriated money to start an organ fund. A ham- mond organ which was purchased this year added much enjoyment to assemblies and various other programs. It has been ex- cellently played by Donald Marsden. .4 Academic credits are given for partici- pation in band. orchestra. and chorus. but many students simply take them for the pleasures derived from belonging to these organizations. Those students who were interested in further improving their musical knowledge and performance took courses in music theory and music appreciation. The music department as a whole is growing in quality and quantity every year. Many students receive free instru- mental instruction in school on band and orchestral instruments. livery year the de- partment enjoys presenting a program for the grade school and junior high students who will be the future music makers of Amityville Memorial High School. wr J Q t Row I, Left to Right: Mr. La Manna, V. udic .V Amityville Memorial High School has a music department of which it can be proud. Awards are presented at the end of two and four-year periods to students who have shown great interest and have given their whole-hearted cooperation in music activities. This year the hand gave superb per- formances under the direction of Mr. Flemming at the football games and as- semblies. They also continued to exercise their talents by playing in tl1e community hand during the summer months. The Off W TF Christmas and spring concerts were huge successes and were enjoyable to everyone, participants and viewers. Annually the band and chorus have performed at an open air concert at Jones Beach, this year being no exception. The high school orchestra under the di- rection of Mrs. Lush has participated in all musical functions of the school pro- gram. Each year the orchestra is increas- ing in size and the students work very hard to perfect their techniques in this aspect of music education. Varied solos A ea fm Row l. Left in Right: A. This year the chorus numbered 80 stu- dents under the direction of Mr. LaManna, a new faculty member with whom we were happy to work. Some of the chorus func- tions were performing at assemblies, at concerts, and playing for the Parents Asso- ciation. A selected chorus of 30 students had special rehearsals in the mornings on their own time. Each year the voeally in- clined may audition for NYSSMA. Those who were chosen from Amityville were Roberta Mahlsledt, Rosemary Feliney, Richard Buchmaier, and Charles Brantley. Aside from the band, orchestra, and chorus we have the German Band known as the Hungry Five. a dance band, and numerous instrumental ensembles. These groups have performed at assemblies, for service organizations, and have made other Ofllrf outside appearances. The dance band mem- bers practiced three mornings a week be- fore school. The music department took its annual trip to the Metropolitan Opera where a performance of Tosca was enjoyed. We, the graduating seniors wish to ex- press our sincere gratitude to Mr. Flem- ming, director of music in the Amityville Memorial High School, Mrs. Lush, orch- estra director, and Mr. LalVIanna, choral director, who, by bringing music into our lives, have enlightened our hearts and en- riched our minds. We also wish to thank them for the school spirit their organiza- tions have promoted and for their con- tributions to the musical life of the community. Raw I, Left to Right: J. Damieo, D.
