The Student Council, representing the entire student body, began another year under the able direction of Ben Morselli, President, Donald Beckwith, Vice Presi- dentg Pat Doogan, Secretary, Judy Dris- coll, Treasurerg and our counselor, Mr. Pucciarelli. As in the past, the Council continued its support of Gil, our Korean War or- phan. In addition checks were sent to Care and to the Salvation Army. Money was also contributed toward the purchase of Thanksgiving baskets, which were donated to worthy families. During the month of October the Coun- cil sponsored its flrst dance, the Bermuda Cruise. Everyone enjoyed the dance and the colorful array of Bermuda shorts and shirts that were seen. The Toy Jamboree was presented to obtain gifts for the or- phans for Christmas. Admission to the dance was one toy. The Jamboree was a huge success and helped to make Christ- mas memorable for the orphans. Because the council is continually striv- ing to improve itself, some members vis- ited the Councils of several Long Island schools. Notes were compared and new ideas were discussed at the meetings. One suggestion was to start a point system based on membership in the different clubs in school. This system would enable members of these clubs to accumulate enough points to earn an award. In this way, students who did not participate in athletics but were active in other extra- curricular activities would receive recog- nition. Among the other activities of the Stu- dent Council was the sponsorship of A. M. H. S. on the Herb Sheldon television program. All who participated enjoyed the experience. This year the Council expanded its membership by the addition of the A. M. H. S. Service Club. lt is hoped that a G. O. will be organized in the near future. We feel that the Student Council had done a fine job and will continue in the same tradition.

onor ociefg The Edward Reed Cage Chapter of the National Honor Society was named in honor of the father of a member of the class of ,57. Mr. Gage taught chemistry for a number of years before he became principal of our high school. Amityville became a member of the National Honor Society in 19417. Each year the society inducts new mem- bers on the basis of the four ideals of the National Honor Societyr character, leader- ship and service. All teachers judge the students according to these characteristics. The students who qualified for member- ship this year were inducted at a formal ceremony held during an assembly. Dean Hoxie of C. W. Post College of Long Island was guest speaker and talked about what students should expect in college. The new members were sworn in and re- ceived membership cards and gold pins. The oflicers are Gary Staudt. presidentg Tl Emmolo, vice presidentg Marie Mir- anda, secretaryg and Don Beckwith, treas- urer. This year the society under the direction of Mr. Alfred Kalfus has undertaken the sale of review books. The society has adopted this as a way to reimburse the treasury each semester and to release this burden from the teachers. The society has set down strict rules for attendance and committee work. The school paper features a column as a cre- ative outlet for the members. Plans for the future include a handbook which would be sold in September of each year as an introduction and orientation for new students. It will give a listing of all activities, a map of the school and many things of concern to new students. be me 3135.115 tj . ,, fe fr '- S ' Row I, Left to Right: Mr. Kalfus, .l. Floen, M. Boyn, N.
