The boards of education of the nation have an added responsibility this year in directing the activities of the schools to the full achievement of the defense program and the realization of the Federal Governments huge undertaking for the safety of the western hemisphere and of our democratic way of life. In every community there are special defense needs which the school boards and their executives must meet. ln this connection eight points suggested by a mid-West state organization of superintendents are valuable: Cooperate with specific program already in operation and co-ordinate all de- fense efforts connected with the schools. Point the tone of the year's work toward national defense. Add emphasis on health and physical education instruction. Emphasize democratic principles in the general conduct of schools. Consciously teach democracy and citizenship. Build extra classroom activities around the defense program. Emphasize conservation of resources. Set up functional guidance programs. A D SPICE OE ACT I ITIE The band, the glee clubs, the orchestras, the sextets, and the quartets provide ex- cellent opportunities for developing the abilities of young virtuosos. The clubs, the Tri-Y, the Hi-Y, and the Future Farm- ers of America, offer to students many chances for self-expression. The student publications, the Record and the Annual, the Dramatics Department and the l-lam Actors Association-all encourage stu- dents to take part in activities which will develop their particular talents. A Message Priorities is the word that confronts us in every direction today. Uls this trip neces- sary? Governor Bricker of Ohio would have us post on every garage door and at the limits of every city. We must give thought to what is essential and what is nonessential. Fosclick reminds us that Difficulties pull the trigger. What it explodes depends upon what we are loaded With. We must make our school experience count in preparing ourselves for what it takes.
