7 . L 'Mgr x,....n The first schoolhouses in Amherst township were one-room log cabin buildings. One of these buildings was located on South Ridge: another was built just beyond the corporation east of Amherst: and a third was establish- ed west of the village. These log cabin structures' date back to I823. When the log schools became in- adequate, the old Town Hall, a frame building twenty-five feet by thirty-five, was used as the educational center. Typical fixtures of these first schools were wood stoves and rough slab seats. ln l856 was erected the first brick schoolhouse, a three-room building two stories in height and twenty-five feet by forty. This school, which was built at a cost of thirty-two hundred dollars, was located on the present school site, on land given by Judge Josiah Harris, one of Amherst's first settlers.
