X 07145 ,p-O? Amherst, the Sandstone Center of the Wox'ld, is celebrating its one hun- dred twenty-fifth anniversary this year. To this vicinity, three miles south of Lake Erie and thirty-two miles south- west of Cleveland, the first settlers came in l8l4. One of the outstanding attractions of the town today is the Old Spring. This natural spring was the center of the first settlement here in Amherst. ln one hundred twenty-five years the community has grown from a few houses grouped around the spring to a settlement covering an area of three square miles, inhabited by more than three thousand people. The first settlers were of New Eng' land and Pennsylvania stock. Today, the inhabitants of Amherst represent twelve or more of the nations of the world.
