These pupils were not grouped accord- ing to classes and then promoted at the end of the term. Each pupil studied lVlcGuffey's First Reader until he com- pleted it, and then he began the Sec- ond Readerg in this way sometimes there were eight or more reading classes a day and only one or two pupils in some of those classes. All the pupils studied reading, writing, arithmetic, and spelling, and a few boys and girls added geography and gram- mar to their course of study: grammar, however, was considered a girls' sub- ject in the early days. 1 fgfii- f 'X v r fi?
