The goals of rhe ADC program ore ro give srudenrs a quoliry, college prepororory educorion and ro increase rhe number of well-educored minoriry people. ADC rrodirionolly idenrifies minoriry srudenrs who possess rhe requi- sire morivorion, inrelligence, and sromino ro be successful. Ir ' s o very comperirive program and in order for one ro beligible, rhe oppliconr musr be in rhe rop 10 percenr of his doss wirh o grade poinr average of or leasr 90 and score well on rhe required Secondary Schools Admissions Tesr. He also musr hove good academic ond charocrer recommendarions ond demonsrrore o high degree of personol mori- vorion. Srudenrs demonsrrore rheir charocrer and porenriol rhrough an opplicorion, in which rhey musr wrire essoys ond ger reocher recommendarions The opplicorion goes rhrough on exrensive screening process in which only rhe besr ore chosen. This year alone, 500 new srudenrs were placed in ADC schools, borh public and privare, for enrollmenr in Sepr. 1981. The srudenrs were selecred from on oppliconr pool of more rhon 1,800 Amhersr Degionol has hod ADC porricipanrs since 1968. Our pro- gram is one of rhe rwenry-four Public School Progroms in New England ond one of rhe four programs in Wesrern Mossochuserrs. Since ADC srresses ocodemic ochievemenr, rhere are requiremenrs which we musr follow. We ore encouroged nor ro roke any bosic classes, we hove mondorory srudy hours from 7:00 PM-9:30 PM Sundoy rhru Thursday, and each srudenr musr mainroin or leasr o 3.0 grade average. Our progrom has 10 srudenrs, eighr of whom ore new. We live in o huge Vicrorion house wirh o Desidenr Fomily and rwo residenr rurors. Living in Amhersr is o big odjusrmenr. Mosr srudenrs leave home or rhe oge of fifreen and some as early os rhirreen, many of whom hove never been away from home. Jusr living in rhe small rown of Amhersr is difficuir, since mosr of us ore used ro rhe fosr-moving- ond Amhersr is far from fosr-moving! The mojor odjusrmenr is ro a predeominonriy whire school, which con be very frighrening. However, by rhe end of rhe firsr morking period, srudenrs have made rhe odjusrmenr.
