F OOTB LL This year the Hurricanes were a spirited team under the direction of Coach McDon- ough, but due to the inexperience and light- ness of the players, their record was not im- pressive. Amherst showed their best form in the Booster Day game with the highly rated Ludlow, when they kept the ball the entire first half and scored to lead, six to nothing. They lost by a very close margin after giving the champion Ludlow team the scare of their lives. Our lettermen were as follows: Seniors: Ernie Boynton at center, Captain Jim Coyne at tackle and right halfback, Manager Dave Damon, Wayne Dow at left halfback, Dick Perchak at end, and Ray Spillane at end, Juniors: Bill Doherty at quarterback, Bill Dzuiba at fullback and left halfback, Tom Knightly at tackle, Don Maia at end, guard, and left halfback, Wally Bartos at guard, Charlie Mannheim at end, and Art Warren at tackle, Freshmen: Fred Allen at guard and Gary Conklin at end and fullback. We are anticipating a good season next LU I fall as nine lettermen are returning. In February the band sent five members to the All State Concert in Worcester. In March it played at the Small School Basketball Tournament at the University of Massa- chusetts. An orchestra, a string quartet, and a dance band were all organized this year, but their recent birth prevented any immediate appearances, more may be expected in years to come. The string quartet, however, performed at the Christmas Concert and on other occasions to the credit of its members, Diana Brown, Lynn Hare, Ann Wardwell, and Martha Whitney.
