l Al dedication VVe, the graduating class of 1959, wish to dedicate our Tower to Mr. Walter Reitz to show him the respect and esteem in which he is held by the students of Amherst. To those who have known him personally, he has taught an appreciation of music and hard workg to those who have known him only through the operettas, he has brought great enjoyment. It is our hope that this dedication will long be a reminder to him of our gratefulness and appreciation for his untiring efforts to bring to us the beauty of music. 5

foreword In the following pages we have attempted to capture the true spirit of Amherst. This is an impossible task, for that spirit is the collective thoughts, emotions, and deeds of12oo individuals. How can words and pictures project' the tense, thrilling excite- ment of a crowd of loyal rooters in the last few minutes of a close Friday night game? How can we record the satisfaction of doing a chemistry experiment right for a change? Wfho could count all the individual success and disappointments each of us has known here? The 1959 Tower is themeless. Wfe have not tried to make Amherst into a space ship or a medieval castle or a steel mill. W7e have told the story of what takes place beneath those three proud towers without gimmicks and without corn.', You will forget Amherst. Thoughts ofthe things you did here and the people you know here will become dim and misty mem- ories. You will forget the faces in the halls, the assemblies and the cafeteria where you sat down to lunch on every school day for three years. Perhaps sometime in the future you will pick up your 1959 Tower and it will remind you of what you did for Amherst, of what Amherst did for you. We hope so, for after all, that should be the purpose of a yearbook. 4
