So the English Departments major goal is competency in the four language arts: reading, writing, speaking. and listening. Young people must learn to read intelligently, interpreting accurately the meaning and evaluating critically both the written and spoken word, lest they be misled by the propagandist. The competitive spirit of our times stresses the importance of a better-than-adequate vocabulary for college placement and job ad- R., 'filzrgr MORTON KLAYMAN: Speech, adviser ot' Amards, Thespian Society, draniatics coach vancement. Intelligent reading helps to develop such a vocabulary. The habit of reading good books, classic and modern, as well as the better periodicals, can provide a life-time of enjoyment. We attempt to encourage this interest through a knowledge of literature. While the goals of instruction are practically the same for all, the degree of attainment corresponds with the ability and interest of the student. We are using new and varied materials and techniques, con- stantly searching for those most suited to the different needs of our students.
