Through their insistence upon high standards and their search for means of improvement, we have been able to main- tain one ofthe finest educa- tional systems in this area. It is with a deep sense of' gratitude that we express our appreciation to these hard working people for their services to Eggerts- ville and Snyder. MR. SCHWEICKHARD Mr. Philip A. Schweickhard, the Super- vising Principal of the Amherst Junior and Senior High Schools, has the job of coordinating their educational activities. Our community can note with respect and enthusiasm the eflorts of Mr. Schweick- hard's twenty-eight years of service. Our phenomenal adult education program, and the educational improvements noted constantly in our schools, have been largely due to his foresight and effort. The innumerable services he has rendered in his years at Amherst are reflected in the success of our school. BCARD OF EDUCATION 4 -1- - Q Mr. H. Kenneth Hornburg. Mr. T. L. Masterson, president. So the English Departments major goal is competency in the four language arts: reading, writing, speaking. and listening. Young people must learn to read intelligently, interpreting accurately the meaning and evaluating critically both the written and spoken word, lest they be misled by the propagandist. The competitive spirit of our times stresses the importance of a better-than-adequate vocabulary for college placement and job ad- R., 'filzrgr MORTON KLAYMAN: Speech, adviser ot' Amards, Thespian Society, draniatics coach vancement. Intelligent reading helps to develop such a vocabulary. The habit of reading good books, classic and modern, as well as the better periodicals, can provide a life-time of enjoyment. We attempt to encourage this interest through a knowledge of literature. While the goals of instruction are practically the same for all, the degree of attainment corresponds with the ability and interest of the student. We are using new and varied materials and techniques, con- stantly searching for those most suited to the different needs of our students.
