POKE WORD THE sparkling, ever-changing life here at Amherst Central is quite easily likened, by our students, to the beautiful, intricate, challenging life of the great world beneath the sea. We note that many students Hnd themselves lost in the misty underworld or tangled in unfathomable snares of seaweed, but we are more likely to find those who have succeeded in finding the treasure chests which may have seemed hidden to the others. Those who have gained this wealth have found that although the administration of knowledge may have been a painful task, much as the oyster finds the irritation of a grain of sand beneath his shell, the perseverance and hard work they have exercised have enabled them to attain their goals, as the oyster, a perfect pearl, shimmering in its pure opalescent beauty. We compare our principal, Mr. Schweickhard, to Neptune, ruler of our land. He and his court of faculty members see that our marine life is kept constantly advancing and ever improving. The seventh graders we find comparable to snails-so calm and peaceful is their progress. The freshmen are the effervescent bubbles of energy and pep, ready to pop at the slightest provocation. Finally we find the seniors, wise old inhabitants of the deep, represented by majestic coral reefs, radiating their brilliance over the entire ocean floor. The land of the deep is rich in an untold wealth of culture and diversity. So, too, at Amherst do we find music, dramatics, athletics, and many other extra-curricular activities which are designed to create well-rounded students. Let us now climb on our seahorses and begin our trip through the land below the sea, hoping that our journey will recall to us some of the treasured memories of the life within.
