At the national level, President Carter struggled with Congress over a new energy program while billions of dollars were spent on government-funded energy research. Ames and the surrounding area were served by the Ames Laboratory on the ISU campus. With 9696 of lowa's energy imported, the Ames Lab looked at statewide energy solutions as well as national ones. According to Dick Greve of the lowa Coal Research Project, out of 5000 coal mines once in operation, only five are left.
