Througn organizations such as Young Republicans and Young Democrats, students were given a chance to help out from the grass-roots of a campaign Members of Young Democrats helped out by canvasing for Neil Hines and Kent Hall, candidates for State Representative, and U.S. Congressman Tom Harkin. The 26 members went door-to-door delivering leaflets to house in Ames. In order to give students a better idea of where the candidates stood on the issues, the Young Democrats arranged a debate at the High School between the candidates for State Representative in the 41st and 42nd Districts. The young Republicans were given the demanding task of organizing a visit by President Ford. They made an all-out blitz of the city in order to publicize Ford's visit. With the help of 93 high school volunteers they took handbills about the President's visit all over Ames. Frequent calls were made to the White House to assure that the speech came off as smoothly as possible. Head co- ordinator Lance Kaeberle felt that the — 8 — youth in pol N- D AES - o 9 (H
