In charge of all financial matters and school policies for the Ames schools was its governing body, the Board of Education. School board elections are held each March to elect members for three-year terms. Terms are staggered, so there will always be expe- rienced members on the Board. Officers of the 1956-57 Board of Educa- tion were: Frank B. Howell, secretary; Hiram Munn, treasurer: and Walter Hetzel, super- intendent. The superintendent is elected by the Board. He acts as the executive officer. The Board also appoints a secretary each year, and a treasurer is elected every two years. The secretary of the Board also serves as a purchasing agent. His duties include the purchasing of school property and the respon- sibility for the rental of school property. Members of the 1956-57 Board of Educa- tion were: James Frazier, Thomas E. Man- num, Earl Holtz, Mrs. Lee Rosebrook, J. M. Walter, and Mrs. Julia Cole Welden. Regular meetings of the Board of Educa- tion were held on the second Monday of each month. Superintendent Heading the governing body of the Ames public school system for the second year was Walter Hetzel, who coordinated the activities and func- tions of the Ames schools. Mr. Hetzel served as the executive officer of the Board of Education, the body that is responsible for all school policies and financial matters. Assisting him in the office were: Frank B. Howell, secretary to the Board of Education: Mrs. Grayce Elliott, secretary to the Superintendent: Miss Laura Sayre, secretary to Mr. Howell: Mrs. Edna H. Davis, bookkeeper; and Mrs. Julie Klindt and Mrs. Betty Boldt, secretaries. The office staff was responsible for answering phone calls, receiving visitors, writing letters, and assisting Mr. Hetzel in any other way they could. Principal Assisting Mr. Adams in the of- fice and leading busy lives were Mrs. Daisy Flack and Mrs. Ruth Green. The secretaries performed a multitude of services for Ames High, a few of which included typ- ing daily bulletins, weekly calen- dars, and stamping passes. They also filled in excuse slips, wrote letters, and acted as receptionists. They were assisted by the student help: Celia Hammond, Carol Cum- mings, Sandy Shultz, and Karyl Sills. They helped with the general office work. Holding down the executive eat in Arne- High School was Principal Herbert Adams, to whom Ames High School students will for- ever be indebted for support and guidance. The responsibility of administering the high school, organizing and coordinating all the various groups and units, and guiding the students were all included in the duties of Mr. Adams. He acted as a clearing agent for all problems of the school, and interpreted and executed the rules and regulations of the Board of Education as they affected the high school. Making out a schedule of classes for each member of the student body, advising the teachers, the students and the student groups were also responsibilities of the principal. Mr. Adams also spent part of his busy year welcoming visitors and new students, in- terviewing student teachers and supervising high school organizations. Mrs. Ruth Green twelve
