Jrom h i' Ltlitor Elizabeth Matlle Editor THE ANNUAL staff has worked hard this year to make our annual attractive and of greater value in the future. Last spring the class elected staff members who formulated plans. Daring the first week of school the Seniors were busy selling advertisement for our annual. We are happy to have sold as many ads as we did, so it would be possible to bring this annual to you. I would especially like to thank the members of the Senior Class who have been so kind and generous with their time. The faculty for letting us picture them and their classes, every merchant far purchasing advertisement, to the student body, without whose help this annual would have been impossible. On behalf of the staff, I would also like to express our appreciation to our Annual Sponsor, Mrs. Glennis Leonard, for her co-operation and aid in helping us plan our annual. A big thank you to all. The Student Council, with Mr. Claude Davidson as sponsor got into action early in the school year by attending a convention at Manhattan High School, Manhattan, Kansas. With a goal of encouraging and promoting greater participation in school activities; promoting a greater degree of co- operation between the student body and the faculty; to promote and regulate social activities, to represent the student body views in all matters relating to the welfare of the school and to promote co-ordination of student groups, the council went to work. Officers elected were: Gary Gibb - President, Kermit Grother - Vice President, Elizabeth Matile - Secretary-Treasurer. A fund raising project of the council was the selling of pennants. The profit was approximately $40. The council sponsored many all-school activities during the year. First, a successful Christmas Exchange where Santa made a special visit. In con- nection with homecoming, a Miss Americus contest was held February 3, 1961. The three candidates, Connie Forbeck, Karol Ann Gatewood, and Cheryl Mounkes were chosen by the Basketball Squad, from the girls of the Junior and Senior class. Miss Americus was then elected by the student body. The queen, and her attendants were presented corsages. A rhinestone crown, purchased by the student council, was used at the coronation. The master-of-ceremonies was Lyle Mann and Gary Bruce sang- Miss Americus. Other activities this year included a semi-formal, all school party held on St. Patrick's Day. To roundout a successful year a last-day-of-school picnic was held. The student council and Mr. Davidson feel that they have accomplished many things this school year by their co-operation with one another. 1 6 vie m en 6ay LXFT TO RIGHT: John Mounkes, Marilyn Simpson, Raymond Moore, Carolyn Baker, Jo Anne Hansen, Rose Yeakly, Phillip Zink, Janet True, Robert Briggs, Ralph Hedgespeth, Mrs. Daniel, Cecilia Price, Hobart Miner, Richard Luginsland, Clarence Talley, Donald Furman, Thomas Newman. S8 a in ) i o n. A SIZZLING Americus Indian quintet won their first state B basketball championship by defeating the Overbrook Gophers by a score of 64-63. The Indians, by capturing the championship, remained the only undefeated high school basketball team in the state. Americus had to down Logan in a Sudden Death overtime in the first round of play, to gain a place in the semi-finals. Rich Edmiston climaxed a tension packed contest with a dramatic jump shot from the comer to give the Indians the win. In the second game the team breezed by Mid-Way with a 72-57 count. In the championship battle Kermit Grother scored a lay-up to tie the game in the regulation time, then went on to score another lay-up goal with one second remaining in the overtime period to give the Indians their gold basketballs and the championship. Three Indian players were picked on the first ten by the sports writers, officials and announcers at the tournament. Tying for high, with John Rose of Overlook, with 146 points was Rich Edmiston, as the most valuable player. He was also third high in scoring with 74 points. Kermit Grother was placed in sixth position; he was fourth high in scoring 61 points. Kermit, during the regular play, was the leading rebounder with an average of eleven rebounds per game. Gary Gibb who was chosen to the fourth position on the tournament team was fifth high in scoring with 60 points. During the regular season, Gary made 80% of his free throws. Richard Proehl with his ball control and rebounding ability and Dean Edmiston who led the fast brake and ball hawking, contributed much to the success of the team. The team as a whole hit for 41% against Logan, 5 3% against Mid-Way and 50% against Overbrook. At the head of this group is a man, young in years, but old in the ways of the sports arena, Mr. Richard Freeman, who has gained, and rightly so, the title Master Coach. His team has learned its lesson well, which is the greatest honor that a coach can receive. A team and coach such as this will long be remembered at Americus High. 32 3l OurS A Team ATHLETES DRINK 7-UP Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus Amerlcus DISTRICT TOURNAMENT 56 Northern Heights 37 54 Burlingame 36 REGIONAL TOURNAMENT 75 Wllliamburg 54 73 W estphalia 50 67 Melvem 56 STATE TOURNAMENT 69 Logan 67 72 M ldway 57 64 Overbrook 63 Olivet Northern Heights Roosevelt Reading W llsey Hartford Olpe Neosho Raphlds W llsey Northern Heights Burlingame Roosevelt Reading Hartford Olpe Neosho Raphlds LEFT TO RIGHT: (White uniforms “A team.
