In compiling this annual, we have made an effort to capture some of the high lights of school life that might bring pleasant reminders at a later date. We hope that you enjoy this book with us. The girls wore men's shirts, girls' shorts, men's work shoes, onion corsages, and a.chicken bone in their hair. The boys wore girls' shorts, men's shirts, nylon hose, and high heels. All were painted in brilliant hues and were required to carry a glass of colored water and pick up toothpicks scattered throughout the school by the seniors. The class officers the first year were: President, Martha Duncan; Vice-President, Betty Jackson; Secretary, Joyce Davidson; Treasurer, Jerry Bamesberger, and Student Council, Floyd Daharsh. Mrs. Bill Harnden was our sponsor. During the year, Bill Rogers joined the class and Shirlene Fiant moved away. When we returned to school in the fall of 1951, we discovered we were minus Jerry Chase and Bill Rogers who had moved away during the summer. This year we elected Eilene Daharsh as our class president; Jerry Karr as vice-president; Shirley Allen, secretary; Pat Tils, treasurer; and Floyd Daharsh, student council member. Miss Virginia Peery was our sponsor. In the spring of that year, we assisted the junior class in giving the annual junior-senior banquet by serving and helping provide the entertainment. We also gave an all-school party which had a St. Patricks Day theme. In the Every-Pupil Scholarship tests, Floyd Daharsh was awarded first in Class D in the state in Industrial Arts. In the fall of our junior year we elected the following officers: President, Pat Tils; Vice-President, Jerry Bamesberger; Secretary, Betty Jackson; Treasurer, Martha Duncan; and Student Council, Floyd Daharsh. Our sponsors were Mrs. Mabel Scott and Miss Rhoda Austin. We were joined by Yvonne Anderson during that year. We presented a play, Grandma's Best Years, sponsored a paper drive, a hobo day, and defeated the seniors in a magazine subscription campaign. We gave the senior class a Western banquet. The gym was decorated in the form of the Lucky Horse- shoe Ranch. A rail fence made of posts encircled the gym. The fence was.decorated with saddles and brilliant blankets. Trees and bales of straw were placed at various places around the corral . A covered wagon was erected in front of the kitchen door to represent a chuck wagon. At the entrance of the corral, were two tall postsand a cross-bar with Lucky Horseshoe Ranch painted on it. Instead of spelling out Horseshoe, we nailed an inverted horseshoe on the bar between the words Lucky and Ranch. ” After the meal, we were entertained by Reverend Stephen Williamsof Emporia who was guest speaker. The remainder of the evening was spent square dancing. Upon returning to school in 1953, we had one less member as Betty Jackson quit school to marry a former AHS grad. To start things off with a bang, we initiated a class of fifteen freshmen, two new students in the upper classes, and four new teachers. In the evening we sponsored a hayrack ride and a watermelon feed. On September 30, we made a trip to Osage to have our pictures taken. We attended a movie at the Drive-In in Osage, as a guest of the photographer. We lost to the juniors in a magazine campaign, but we had a high salesman from our class, Eilene Daharsh. Also we sponsored several parties, two of which were for the loss of the basketball season tickets and magazine sales contests; the annual Christmas party, and a W. P. A. (Women Pay All) party held at the Bluestem Hall. Rest Assured was the title of our senior play given April 16. Don Cade was our sponsor. Out of the graduating class only three members started in the first grade together. They were Shirley Allen, Jerry Bamesberger, and Patricia Tils. The Commencement address was given by Reverend Stephen Williams on May 21. 1954. SENIOR CLASS PROPHECY Chet Lowe, custodian of the Americus High School, wishing to locate the class of '54 to see if they were worthy of being included in his will, went to a local prophet- ess to see if she could help him find out what the former students of AHS were doing. The crystal ball was very cloudy at first but gradually it cleared and the prophet- ess was able to view the doings of our senior year president, Pat Tils. It seems Pat didn’t get to live on a farm as she had planned. Instead, she has gone to Hollywood where she is co-starring opposite Gene Autry in western movies. At least she is getting td be near horses. Jerry Karr, senior vice president, is seen struggling on drawing ads, only now for the New York Herald. He received his education working for the Indian Scout newspaper of Americus High School. Next, the crystal ball reveals Yvonne Anderson, who was the secretary of the class. She and her husband, a high school heartthrob her last year, run the Columbia Broadcasting System and have their office in New Jersey. Yvonne emcee’s a record program, which is broadcast across the United States. She had to give up her singing after she was married because it seems that she had to practice at night and it kept her husband awake. Bryce Davidson, treasurer during his last year, comes into view next. It seems Bryce lost his grade school sweetheart to one of his old pals, so he is now a wealthy bachelor. As the picture grows clearer, we see that he owns a large shorthorn ranch down in the Big Bend country of Texas. A large herd of horses can be seen roaming the hills near his ranch. Parked in the drive is a large Chrysler convertible. As the prophetess peers into the crystal she spies Floyd Daharsh, the student council member. He had such a good record of ability as a council member that he was chosen by the President of the United States to be the representative from the States at the meeting of the United Nations. Next, the Miller twins, Mary and Martha, are located. It seems they gave up hillbilly music and turned to opera. They are now playing the Metropolitan Opera House in New York. It looks like they have made quite a history as the only twin-sister team ever to be on stage. Barbara Muller is now chief sandwich maker in Katz Drug Store of Kansas City. The only reason she can't work at the fountain is that she started giggling the night of graduation and has never stopped. Next the prophetess sees a large ivy-covered, brick house. Mr. Lowe asks who owns it but the prophetess is unable to tell him. As she continues to watch, an old-fashioned Rolls-Royce appears in the lane leading to the front door. She watches closely as it stops to let the occupants out. Much to their surprise, it is Anne Cook and Shirley Allen. It seems they run a home for the aged. The next picture she sees is Joyce Davidson. She lives in a one-room shack in the Ozarks. Her husband, between watching their black haired boys and washing dishes, is a forest ranger. Joyce spots fires for him and he drives to the location in their wine Mercury. Martha Duncan is still wearing her diamond but it seems she can't run fast enough to catch up with the Santa Fe trains. Her husband-to-be found she always burnt everything she cooked, so he boarded the Super Chief and left for the army. CLASS PROPHECY CONTINUED Eilene Daharsh, first lady sheriff of Texas, is seen driving her Oldsmobile convertible across the Texas plains in hot pursuit after Jerry Bamesberger who is still running from the girls. The crystal ball next reveals Mary Voorhees driving a white Ford with a sign advertising Schnakenberg Motor Company of Emporia. It seems she has worked up quite a business since she married one of the employees there. Mr. Lowe writes to Mr. Cade, the sponsor of the class of '54, whom they see in the crystal ball, as selling shoes full time now at Brown's. Mr. Lowe asks him to get in contact with the graduates of 1954 and have them hitchhike back to Americus. He tells Mr. Cade that this will bring him plenty of business, from all except Joyce who lives in the Ozarks where they all go barefooted. Two weeks later all the class ate back in Americus picking up newspapers to make money so they won't have to hitchhike back to their homes. The former classmates visit the old high school where they find Mrs. Loomis still slaving away with teaching her students to type, and trying to get the school paper out on time.
