' The History classes of this year have swollen to immense proportions. They are made up mostly of energetic Freshmen and Sophomores who have decided to get it over With and take up something more interesting C625 and useful next year, enthusiastic Juniors who get it delightfullumixed with their Literature, and belated Seniors.. The American History class which is principally made up of the belated Seniors, is taught by Miss Mildred Allen. There are five classes a week. Regular notebooks are kept and individual biographies of great men from the Civil 'War are the term projects. Universal History is taught to the 'Freshmen also by Miss Allen, The Universal History-covers medie- val and mcidern times and is necessary for entryiinto government schools. Miss Cecilia Kays teaches Modern'and Medieval History upon which many 'interesting debates are held. Maps are drawn and special credit is given for original posters. The project for the term is the Writing of special essays bv various pupils on modern events in European countries. ' Miss Virginia Cottingham teaches the Ancient History. THE LANGUAGE DEPARTMENT. ' - SPANISH Fortunate is the student of a language Who may study it in the country Where it is spoken, since the courses are so much more thorough. Spanish is required from the first grade up in the elementary gradesg Mexican history, geography, and' civics are given in addition to the grammatical side of the language. Senorita Candano teaches the seventh and eighth grades, the latter grade having the advantage of studying Spanish literatlgigf Altheugh Se- iora Banoshas but recently joined usfshe has gained the favor of her classes, some of her classes are enjoying El Haz de Lenaf, ga tragic poem by Nunes de Arce, after laboring for the first half of the semester oii grammar and the history of Mexican literature. Mr. Angeles,- as in the past years, teaches the History of Mexico, Uliiteratura Espa1'iola and 4'Literatura lberoamericanau to his very attentive classes. C 0 M M E R C E- The commercial classes have continued to make splendid progress under the excellent supervision of Miss Dorothy Dinsmoore. VVhen School opened twenty-one students enrolled for shorthand and progressed steadily until the required speed of 90 Words a minute was attained. Gregg shorthand in Spanish was -taught .by Mrs, Banos to those who had completed the course in English. By the end -of the second term the students had acquired the speed of 90 words a minute and were able to Write correct' business letters in Spanish.
