JAY JOHNSON Ar native of West Salem, Wisconsin, Captain Johnson was commissioned on 5 june 1968 following graduation from the United ,States 'Naval Academy. He entered flight training at Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1969. A Q A Following fleet replacement training in the F8J CRUSADER at VF-124, NAS Mira- mar, Captain Johnson reported to VF-191 wherehe made two combat cruises on board USS ORISKANY ICVA 341. I e ' ' ' In july 1973, he reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel where he served as an Aviation junior Officer Detailer until December 1975. This was followed by enrollment at the Armed Forces Staff College, where he graduated in June 1976. Returning to VF-124, Captain johnson underwent transition training in the F-14A TOM- CAT with subsequent assignment to VF-124 in May 1977. During this tour of duty, he made two Mediterranean deployments aboard USS AMERICA ICV 661 and USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER ICVN 691. Q In September 1979, Captain johnson reported to VF-101 , NAS Oceana, where he served as. Executive Officer until July 1980 at which time he reported to VF-84 as Executive Officer. On 22 Octoberl1981, Captain johnson assumed command of VF-84. During this. tour, the squadron 'completed work-ups aboard USS CARL VINSON ICVN 701 and two Mediterra- nean deployments aboard USS NIMITZ ICVN 681. Captain Johnson next reported to the Naval Military Personnel Command where he served as Head, Aviation junior Officer Assignment Branch until September 1984. On 16 March 1985, Captain Johnson assumed command of Carrier Air Wing ONE. During this tour, Air Wing ONE embarked in USS AMERICA ICV 661 during Norwegian Sea operations and a Mediterranean deployment. Upon relinquishing command on 2 July 1986, Captain Johnson reported to Commander Sixth Fleet where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations until June 1987. I ' 1 l Captain Johnson's decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 181, Navy Commendation Medal, and other service X campaign awards. w He is married to the former Garland Ha thorne of Colorado Springs, Colorado. AI1Nf'RfOBERT R. WITTENBERG A native of San Fernando, California, Captain Wittenberg was commissioned on 8 june 1956 following graduation from the United States Naval Academy. He remained at the Academy unti November 1966 assigned as an assistant football coach with the Physical Education Department He entered flight training at Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in lxlay 19152 Following a summer of flying NROTC Midshipmen in the T-34 at Corpus Christi, Texas. li entered fleet replacement training in the A-6 Intruder at VA-128, NAS Whidbey island, lF.7a.sl'ii ton. Captain Wittenberg reported to VA-196 where he made two combat cruises - one aboard all RANGER UCVA 611 and one aboard USS ENTERPRISE QCVAN 651. . In Gctober, 1971, he reported to' U. S. Naval Test Pilot School at Patuxent Eiver. Mfarjl Following graduation, Captain Wittenberg was assigned to the Weapons System Test Ordnance branch, where he flew numerous aircraft on a variety of weapons tests. After returning to VA-128 in September, 1975. Captain iWittenberg again reported 1 for two more Western Pacific deployments aboard USS QC .7Ali 352. In September, 1978, he reported to VA-128 where he served as the Executive Cffficer unti August, 1980 at which time he reported to VA-115 aboard USS llfillDiWAY ICU' 4213 forvfard de- ployed at Atsugi, japan. .Captain Wittenberg assumed Command in April. 1981. Captain Wittenberg next reported to the office of the Deputy Chief of Naval Gperations for Air lWarfare assigned as the A-6,Program Coordinator until july 1984. He then attended the Na- tional 'War College at Fort McNair, Washington, DC. Captain Wittenberg returned to VA-128. at NAS Whidbey Island, Washington where he served as the Commanding Gfficer until Gctober. 1986.1-Ie then was assigned as the Special Assistant for Flag Matters to the Chief of Naval Person- nel in Washington, DC until December, 1988. .- y On 8 july, 1989, Captain'Wittenberg assumed command of Carrier Air Wing ONE while on board USS AMERICA ICV 661 in the North Arabian Sea.
