CAPTAIN JOHN J. MAZACH V' 5 Raised in Nashville, Tennessee, Captain Mazach attended Vanderbilt University under the NROTC Program. He graduated in June 1966 and was commissioned as an Ensign, United States Navy. He immediately entered flight training at NAS Pensacola and was designated a Naval Avia- tor in October 1967 at NAS Chase Field, Texas. . . In June 1968, Captain Mazach became one of the original members of VA-87 after replacement pilot training in the A7B Corsair at VAl174. While attached to the Golden Warriors, he completed one Viet Nam deployment aboard USS TICONDEROGA ICVA 141 and a portion of a Mediterra- nean deployment aboard USS ROOSEVELT ICVA 421. Captain Mazach then received orders to the Bureau of Naval Personnel in December 1970, where he served as a detailer inthe Aviation Assignment Section.- ' In July 1973, he reported to VA-105 after completing replacement pilot training in the A7E at VAf1 7 4. While attached to the Gunslingers, he completed two deployments to the Mediterranean aboard USS SARATOGA ICV 601, serving as Operations Officer and Maintenance Officer. His next assignment was to the Air Command and Staff College, Maxwell Air Force Base in june 1976. Upon graduation in June 1977, Captain Mazach once again reported to VA-174 for A7E replacement pilot training and then to the VA-15 Valions as Executive Officer in December 1977. He assumed command of VA-15 on 19 April 1979. . In june 1980, Captain Mazach was again ordered to Washington, D.C. as the Head, Aviation LCDR and Junior Officer Assignment Section, Naval Military Personnel Command, where he served until February 1982. In July 1982, Captain Mazach assumed duties as Commander, Carrier Air Wing THREE where he served until 'April 1984. 1 Captain Mazach was then assigned to COMNAVAIRLANT as the Air Wing Training Officer, until january 1986 when hedeparted for the Senior Officer ShipiMateria1 Readiness. Course and ,training prior' to assuming command of USS SEATTLE IAOE 31 in June 1986. In - I Captain Mazach's most recent assignment was as Chief of Staff, Cruiser Destroyer Group A ,Captain Mazac,h's decorations include the Legion pfjMgg5g,,Distinguished Flying Cross, Meri- torious Service Medal with two gold stars,-Air Medal with Combat , Vf' and various other unit 'citations and to the former Pat Waggoner of ashville, Tennessee. JAY JOHNSON Ar native of West Salem, Wisconsin, Captain Johnson was commissioned on 5 june 1968 following graduation from the United ,States 'Naval Academy. He entered flight training at Pensacola, Florida and was designated a Naval Aviator in October 1969. A Q A Following fleet replacement training in the F8J CRUSADER at VF-124, NAS Mira- mar, Captain Johnson reported to VF-191 wherehe made two combat cruises on board USS ORISKANY ICVA 341. I e ' ' ' In july 1973, he reported to the Bureau of Naval Personnel where he served as an Aviation junior Officer Detailer until December 1975. This was followed by enrollment at the Armed Forces Staff College, where he graduated in June 1976. Returning to VF-124, Captain johnson underwent transition training in the F-14A TOM- CAT with subsequent assignment to VF-124 in May 1977. During this tour of duty, he made two Mediterranean deployments aboard USS AMERICA ICV 661 and USS DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER ICVN 691. Q In September 1979, Captain johnson reported to VF-101 , NAS Oceana, where he served as. Executive Officer until July 1980 at which time he reported to VF-84 as Executive Officer. On 22 Octoberl1981, Captain johnson assumed command of VF-84. During this. tour, the squadron 'completed work-ups aboard USS CARL VINSON ICVN 701 and two Mediterra- nean deployments aboard USS NIMITZ ICVN 681. Captain Johnson next reported to the Naval Military Personnel Command where he served as Head, Aviation junior Officer Assignment Branch until September 1984. On 16 March 1985, Captain Johnson assumed command of Carrier Air Wing ONE. During this tour, Air Wing ONE embarked in USS AMERICA ICV 661 during Norwegian Sea operations and a Mediterranean deployment. Upon relinquishing command on 2 July 1986, Captain Johnson reported to Commander Sixth Fleet where he served as Assistant Chief of Staff for Operations until June 1987. I ' 1 l Captain Johnson's decorations include the Legion of Merit, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal 181, Navy Commendation Medal, and other service X campaign awards. w He is married to the former Garland Ha thorne of Colorado Springs, Colorado. They reside with their daughter, Cullen, in Virginia
