C. MACKE Admiral Richard C. Macke, son of Mr. and Mrs. Chester Macke, was born in Freeport, Illinois on January 4, 1938. He is a graduate of Kirkland High School, Kirkland, Illinois and of the U.S. Naval Academy where he earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in June 1960. He entered flight training at Pensacola, Florida in july 1960 and was designated a Naval Aviator in August 1961. He reported to VA-23 in Lemoore, California and flew A-4 Skyhavvks for the next four years accumulating over 200 arrested landings on USS MIDWAY ICV-411. Rear Admiral Macke entered Navy Test Pilot School in February 1965 and after graduation served in the Weapons System Test Directorate. There he participated in many projects and was Proj- ect Officer for the A-4 Shoehorn and the Navy Preliminary Evaluations and Board of Inspec- tion and Survey Trials for the A-7 aircraft. From January 1968 to january 1970, Rear Admi- ral Macke was attached to VA-27, flying the A-7A Corsair Il. He served there as Administra- tive Officer and completed two deployments in USS CONSTELLATIOPN ICV-641 flying more than 150 combat missions in Southeast Asia. Rear Admiral Macke reported to U.S. Naval Postgraduate School in February 1970. Where he graduated with distinction with a Master of Science Degree in Operations Re- search and Systems Analysis. While at Postgraduate School, he was selected for aviation squadron command. In March 1971, he reported to VA-66 at Cecil Field, Florida as Execu- tive Officer and later served as Commanding Officer of this A-7E squadron assigned to USS INDEPENDENCE ICV-621. He was next assigned tothe Navy Office of Legislative Affairs in the Pentagon in Janu- ary 1975, where he helped present the budget for Naval Aviation Programs to members of Congress and their staffs. Fol-lowing selection for and completion of nuclear propulsion train- ing, Rear Admiral Macke served from May 1979 to July 1981 as Executive Officer of USS NIMIT Z ICVN-681. -His tour in NIMITZ included a record-setting deployment to the Indian Ocean. ' . - Q - f Rear Admiral Macke reported as Commanding Officer of USS CAMDEN IAOE-21 followinghisf tour in NIMITZ.. During his-2'2 months in CAMDEN, the ship successfully completed a 14-month complex overhaul -'-the largest ever done in aprivate shipyard on the West'Coast f- and a compressed training period-preparing for a major deployment only ieightmonths .after :completing overhaul. , 1 CAPTAIN Joi-iN J. COONAN, JR. Captain John J. Coonan, the son of Captain and Mrs. John Coonan, USN CRet.J, was born in Pawtucket, Rhode Island. He attended the University of 'Virginia under the Regular NROTC Program graduating in June 1966. Following flight training, Captain Coonan was designated a Na- val Aviator on 29 September 1967 and reported to the East coast A-7 Fleet Replacement Squadron, VA-174. Upon completion of A-7 training, Captain Coonan joined the Golden Warriors of VA-87 as one of the original members. While attached to VA-87, he completed a Vietnam deployment aboard USS TICONDEROGA ICVA 141 and a Mediterranean deployment aboard USS ROOSEVELT UCVA 421. His following tours were as an Aviation Assignment Officer with Commander, Naval Military Personnel Command, VA-813 Light Attack Wing ONE staff, and VA-15 where he served as Executive Officer and then Commanding Officer from June 1980 until September 1981. While commanding VA-15, Captain Coonan was selected as the first East coast recipient of the VADM james Stockdale Award for inspirational leadership. Following his tour as Commanding Officer, Captain Coonan reported to the Office of the DCNO, Manpower and Training as the Aviation Offi- cer Community Manager. Captain Coonan commanded Carrier Air Wing ONE from October 1983 through March 1985 where he deployed aboard USS AMERICA ICV 661. Following that tour, he assumed command of Light Attack Wing ONE in April 1985 where he was responsible for the shore-based training and readiness of all Atlantic Fleet A-7 and FA-18 squadrons. During this tour Captain Coonan was selected for major sea command. He reported as Commanding Officer of USS MARS IAFS 11 in June 1986. During Captain Coonan's tour, USS MARS functionedas the Underway Replen- ishment Group Commander for Battle Group Bravo and deployed to the North Arabian Sea. During this period, USS MARS was awarded the Commander Naval Surface Force Pacific Battle Efficien- cy Award. He became Commanding Officer of USS AMERICA in August 1988. Captain Coonan has accumulated in excess of 4,000 flight hours Cincluding over 3,000 in the A-7 aircraftj and has logged over 1,000 carrier arrested landings. His military awards include Meri- torious Service Medalsg Air, Medals3fthe,Navy Commendation Medal with Combat, Vg and various campaign and ,unit ribbons.
